So I've swapped my 3 spd transmission for the 700R4, however the top of the 700 barely rubs the seam on the transmission tunnel. Is there a chance that you might be able to use a different motor mount to lower the transmission slightly? If not, what's the best method to trimming the seam?

Use the 700 for a boat anchor like it was originally intended to be, and install a Turbo 350. On a scale of 1 to 10, a 700R4 rates about a minus 3. The other option would be to use a 9 pound hammer to create a little more room after removing the transmission to give yourself some space to swing it effectively.

Thanks Jerry. I'm gonna have to live with the boat anchor for a while. This has took a lot longer to get done than I ever thought it would. But if I ever have problems I'll be sure to take your advice.

A sledgehammer is the traditional tool for clearancing seams like that. Pick a direction and roll it all the same way rather than just trying to smash it down.

The biggest thing to making a 700R4 reliable is making sure the TV cable is set up *exactly* right. Close is not good enough. There are a couple aftermarket TV systems available with setup and adjustment procedures.

Making several shallow slots in the pinch weld about an inch apart with a thin cutoff wheel on a small angle grinder makes it easier to roll it up in a uniform fashion. It reduces the amount the metal has to stretch as it rolls.

Depending on how close it is
....on my 52 panel i trimed about 1/2 inch off and the lip of the tranny cover covered it.
I hear Jerry loud and clear but my 700 in the panel worked like a charm for 7 years before I sold it.....and the 800 in my 37 pickup gets abused fairly regular and still running strong.

Maybe jam a large prybar in there and persuade the sheet metal to bend to your will? Just a nudge.

A friend who was doing aftermarket exhaust systems in Ford Powerstrokes that had a flat downpipe used a hydraulic pry tool to fit a 4" downpipe in a spot where there was originally about 2" of space, but that was pretty drastic. That was done with the engine in place.
If you have enough room to swing that sledge, that works just fine. Back it up with another sledge or anvil on the top side and that seam will fold over nicely.
