Does the carrier have to be removed to replace the seal, or can it be accomplished from the exterior of the housing after removing the u joint?

Cutaway drawing makes it look like it can be removed from the outside.

I replace my dana 44 seal. Just pull the yoke. Do not use an impact driver. Buy a new yoke nut SPICER 30271 . You will need a 250 ft. lb. Torque Wrench.
Torque is 200-220 ft.lb.

If you want to do it right, get a new crush sleeve that goes between the bearings and set the pinion bearing preload torque to the right specification by tightening the pinion nut a little at a time and checking the rotation torque with an inch-pound wrench. I believe the specification for used bearings is around 20 inch pounds. Remove the drive axles for the best torque check.
