So I have decided to install the shocks in the original position but I need to know if the upper mount is bolted on the frame or riveted or welded on the frame at the top. I had one and ordered a new one.rear suspension.. It looks like it could have been bolted or pop-riveted. But not showing the bolts for sale like in other things I am not sure.

Ron,

According to the "General Description" paragraphs of Section 2-3 (Shock Absorbers) of the 1954 Shop Manual the rear shocks "Attachment at the upper end is to a bracket riveted to the frame.".

That was how the came from the factory. Since yours were removed at one point, the easiest method to reinstall them would be to bolt them back on using appropriate grade hardware.

Not very likely you will find a shop that can/will rivet them back on correctly unless you have a very deep pocket.

Bolt them on! Grade 8 bolts. I did that on my 49.

Thanks all. I had thought they had been riveted back in the day. I am now waiting for the new bracket to get it done.

Anybody, what to speculate on the length of the bolts?
