I found this truck in a neighbor's barn. Had not run in 10 years since the prevous owner passed away. We put in a set of points, a battery, bypassed the fuel tank which seems to be stopped up and drove it home carefully since the only brakes that work is the emergency brake! Anyway,
there is a sticker on the door that says rated at 16000 pounds and engine horsepower 109 at 3600rpm. Can someone tell me if this is a 6500 and what engine it has. This is my first post and I will post a picture as soon as I figure out how! Thanks

welcome to the shop hope, is it a 55 1st or 2nd?
the 55 2nd has a 6400 model with 16,000 GVW that has a 156.5" WB, called a 2 ton, and the vin would start with a W - the 109hp engine would be the usual 235, prolly the loadmaster version in a 6400

for info about pictures here, see the Manual linked below, we love pictures grin

vin plate should be on the drivers door post above the dogleg or lower on the wide area - might also be stamped on the frame top flange around the steering box, but that was just starting then, so might not be there

Thanks Bill, I was looking at the pictures of other trucks like this one and noticed that mine has a hood ornament that I don't see on other trucks like this. It this something that was orginal to this truck os has someone added this. It looks like the emblem you might see on a 55 chevy car!

that hood bird/plane was an accessory option in 55-56, can't see yours well enuff to tell if it's the right one, but notice that Mike Boteler has one on his restored wrecker - see the difference 55-56 here

you do have the correct emblem on the front of the hood, but are missing the fenderside emblems, which would have the '6400' designation on them

Hope & red58,

The serial numbers for second series 1955 trucks started with number "001001". This makes Hope's truck the 19,042nd "W" unit out of Flint.

I have most of this info listed on my web site.
