Want to try to paint the lettering of the tailgate. Any specific kind of paint I should use? .don't want to use the lettering kit.truck has the rat rod look.

In that case use barn paint and a brush.

Sign paint would also be vintage/rat rod appropriate. I agree that using a brush would give you that look as well.

I use rustoleum alkyd gloss and a 1.5" angled brush.

Be aware that a lot of primers are not UV stabilized, so they will deteriorate pretty quickly outside if not covered up.

I would recommend actual flat paint if you want that look.

You could also consider using Sign Painters' 1 Shot lettering enamel. It comes in many colors.

I had forgotten about that stuff. I used to use it all the time and it was great.

Question. If you are spraying it, how are you masking it? How do you make sure you get good sharp edges? I guess same question if you are using a brush. If you are using a brush are you free handing it or masking and coloring between the lines.

I believe the trick with spraying is to mask it, spray your base color and let it dry. Then spray your alternative color. The base color will bleed under the tape, but it won't matter because it matches the rest. That leaves no where for the alternative color to bleed to. You still need to be accurate in your taping skills.
