Was told this years ago seemed to work but I am curious as to what others use also. .. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,298 Renaissance Man | | Renaissance Man Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,298 | What year 235? The '53 and earlier ones with 2 acorn nuts often need some tinsmith work done to them before they will ever seal regardless of what you use. The later 235s need to be looked at too to make sure that they are not bent out of shape near the 4 bolt holes. (Consider this a public service announcement for others if you have already made sure yours is straight.)

They also prevent the distortion of the sheet metal in the area of the bolt holes. Clones of the Corvair spreader bars are available from most of the specialty auto parts people like JEGS and Summit. I like to use Permatex Super 300 brush-on sealer. It stays flexible and isn't nearly as messy as RTV and other tube type rubber sealers. Jerry

Works just fine so far.

Put your cover on with light torque,if you need in there it;ll come off and can be put back on easily. Over time you'll have to tighten because oil and heat will make the gasket slowly give up. They once made neoprene gaskets but they got so slippery you couldn't keep it in place. Now I never tried the silicon on that neoprene gasket think that is over. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2011 Posts: 1,363 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2011 Posts: 1,363 | The load spreader bars that were originally used on Corvair air cooled engine valve covers make a huge difference in how well a stovebolt cover seals. RTV is horrible, and is the worse stuff to clean off, and won't maintain a good seal unless all the surfaces are surgically clean, not even a finger print is allowed. I rarely use it.
Kicking self for selling off my Taskforce trucks. Still looking for an LCF or conventional big bolt in decent shape.
As of 10-26-2022, A 55.2 Taskforce long bed now the work begins
