Is there a location where I can see a picture of the two speed axle linkage on a 51 two ton? I'm trying to connect the two speed dash switch but it seems that I cannot figure out where thing goes. Is there a connection to the rear of speedometer? I know you all are the experts, so I'm asking. I didn't take a picture of this when I took it apart so I'm lost. Here is the back of my speedo. Am I missing a part?

Yes,that connection to the speedo "shifts" the ratio adapter via a link(small wire)from the two speed switch to keep the speedo accurate.It screws to the back of the speedo head(in line with the cable).You are missing it in your picture.Don't know if a picture is in the shop manual or not.I'll look tonight.

I looked but could not find a picture in the shop manual.Tryed to stand on my head under the dash of my '53 but could not get a part number off that sucker!!Maybe someone else has a picture.

One forum member sent me a picture. I have discovered that when I sent the speedometer in for resoration I had left that part on the back of the spedo. So I've called the company that restored the gage and they are looking for the part. If not found, I'll be searching for a replacement. i thought it might need to be calibrated with the speedometer or I would not have included the adapter when I shipped the gage. Just one more lesson I've learned restoring the Bigbolt!

Virginia firetruck if you can't find your adapter I think I have one from a 58 2 ton, wonder if it is the same?

Thanks. The restoration company reportedly will take a couple of days to get back with me. I'll look for the answer and get back to you once they let me know if they have found my or an adapter.

This is just a guess on my part, but I wonder if it is a really big deal if you can't find the missing part. IF the speedometer is geared to show the correct speed with the rear end in high range, then the only time you would have an incorrect speed would be when you are in low. You can't go very fast in low, and only use it when you are starting out, or when a hill has pulled your speed down, so an accurate speed at that time is not very important anyway. If I am right, you could just connect the cable directly to the back of the speedometer, and forget it.

Does anyone know if my assumption is correct?

BakerAllen: I think you are 100% correct! It looks like it will match up without the adapter. However, I'm just trying to keep the truck like it was in November 1951 except for the fresh air heater which I've added to keep us warm in the winter. I still have not heard back from Chevy Duty or whatever they are called these days... I haven't given up yet!

I'm not certain, but I may know where I can find a used replacement for you. There is a scrap yard near me that has several of these old trucks but I don't know if any of them have two speed axles. These things have been sitting for years,and are full of weeds, rust, bees, probably snakes,and lord knows what else, so I'm not too eager to get into them, but if all else fails, let me know,and I will look into it. Grigg, Has one listed in the "Parts For Sale" section. I'd get his, & then if you get your original one back, you'll have a spare. It always wise to have spares, of the hard to find stuff. I've probably got at least two, of just about every part, of these 'ol trucks.
