Sent the 4000 mile 1958 date coded bias ply tires to the tire recycler. The tubes and flaps look to be in really good condition. Can they be reused in another set of tires? Is it worth saving them or should I discard like I did the tires because of their age?

Destroy them by cutting holes in the wheel parts with a torch, or do whatever it takes to disable them for any future use before scrapping them. You can reuse the flaps, but new tubes in new tires makes a lot of sense. Back when I was selling a lot of tube type tires, most new tires came with a flap included.

He had a widow maker on a large military truck that blew apart while driving on the highway! I've reused tubes and flaps in my 3 piece split rims (the ones you can see the lock ring on the out side of the wheel) and they have worked fine for years. But I would agree the true widow maker wheels should not be used!

It helps any wrinkles in the tube smooth out as the tire is inflated.
