The two speed on my 54 6400 is leaking at the point where the driveshaft connects to it. I would like to fix this, but I'm afraid that if I take it apart, I will not be able to find seals etc.

I have a 1953 truck, but the rear end is from an earlier model. I don't know exactly what year. The one I have has only one brake cylinder, whereas the later models have two. I think it is probably a 48 to 50, but I'm not certain.

The only marks I can find on the two speed is an S on the filler plug.

Has anyone else had this problem? Do you have any idea where I could get the parts to fix it?

I had a very hard time finding seals and bearings for the wheels when I was working on the brakes. I was not able to find brake cylinders, and finally had them sleeved. If I take it apart, and can't find parts to repair it, I will really be up the creek without a paddle.

I don't know what the seal looks like, but I assume it must be something on the order of the seal that goes in the wheels, since it must fit over a shaft.

that'd be the pinion seal, a common problem - try to find one before you take it apart, likely to be the same for a lot of years

Does anyone know of any old truck suppliers that might have one. The ones I know about don't carry much of anything for the big trucks. If I take it apart and take the old one to someone who carries a lot of seals, there is a fair chance they may be able to find one by taking the measurements, but if they can not, then I have ruined the old one, and am worse off than I was before I started. Try Napa, they had the seals for my 1 ton's full floating rear axle. The same seals were used for like 30 years. A big truck parts house probably also has them.

These seals are out there. The same seal was used on '41-'55.1 2-speed rears. Try your local Chevy dealer and ask for part #3651493. They might locate one through the dealer network. You could also try part number searches at Partsvoice or Collector Auto Supply .

If you can get the pinion flange off, you might be able to see the part numbers on the seal for cross referencing.

I took the part number to an Advance Auto store yesterday, and by using their parts interchange system, the located one. It was a special order item, and will take about one week to get here, but it didn't seem to be a problem getting it.

Curt: Thanks for the part number. I can't imagine how you had it so readily available, but that was what did the trick. Without that I probably would not have been able to find it.
