1955 Chevy 4400 1st series...

I need some brake shoe return springs...

These are for the trucks with the 15" x 4" rear brakes (1.5 & 2 ton), two wheel cyls per wheel, that were used from 1953-1960 (?).

There are two return springs on each shoe: a green one and a black one... I need two of the black ones.

If anyone has new or used ( but serviceable)springs, please give a yell...

I just finished rebuilding the entire braking system, but found a broken spring in the right rear drum...

You can try conatcting Jim Carter or someone like that. They always say that if you don't see it in their catalog, give them a call. Other places like Chevy Duty might help you. Also, if you go on the VCCA site and leave a post in the Parts Wanted, you will probably get a response. Also I would think that Mother trucker would have some used ones.

Wouldn't a big truck or a fleet repair shop have something you could use?

I think even napa would have them...??? or could get them....

i didnt need rear springs when i did my 350 gmc. i needed front ones and napa did have them.

My BIG truck parts store had everything but the drums for both my '56 8400 & 57 10500. They had some stuff on the shelf and had the rest in a day or two (return springs, cylinders, axle seals, shoes, adjusters etc.).

Tried two of the local big truck stores (both have been around longer than me - 38 years), they took the spring and tried to match...no go.

Tried ordering a set of springs that were listed for Euclid truck with Wagner 15 x 4 brakes, but the wire was WAY too heavy...

I'm still lookin'...

Anbody got a '52-'60 1.5 or 2 ton that they're parting out ?

NAPA was able to order rear brake springs for my '58 2.5 ton

"Desperate" ? Well, that might be an appropriate adjective when only one little confounded spring stands between you and gettin' the Bolt back on its feet !

So far that's been a no-go with two of the local NAPA stores... (they don't seem overly-motivated to check into it either...)

I have had the same problem with parts clerks. Most of them will not take the time and trouble to help find a part if it doesn't just jump up on their coumputer. Almost any part is available if you can find someone who will take the time to look for it. Try to find some one who has been in business for a long time and has kept his old part books. Usually if you can find some one who has a collection of old dirty books under the counter, he can find the part number and then begin to try to interchange it. I have been luck enough to find two places like that, one is a NAPA store, and the other is a CarQuest location that has a machine shop. The shop foreman has been at it for a long time, and is willing to take the time to look for things. Another place I have found parts is at a local hardware store that carries a very large selection of mechanical items. They have a section that handles bearings and seals, etc., and can often find other old unusual items. Have you done a search of Junk Yards? I have been lucky with that in the past. I found one on the internet that had a number of parts for a 6400 I am working on. I don't have the name at hand but will try to find it and send it to you in another post. I found an invoice from East West Auto Parts Inc, of 4605 Dawson Road, Tulsa OK. Phone 918 832 7077 or 800 447 2886. I know he had some old chevys in his yard several months ago, because I bought a vent glass section from him. I had no complaints at all. I believe he is honest. He has a web site at WWW.eastwestautoparts.com, and e mail at [email protected]. I don't know if he had any large trucks, because the vent glass could have come from a smaller one. I found him by going to GOOGLE and typing in junk yards. A bunch of search services came up. They all claimed to be connected with a large number of yards, and would send the request to all of them. If anyone had the part they would contact me. I don't remember which one I used. This fellow was the only one who replied. You might give him a try. Allen. PS: I know of a local small yard that I am sure has some old chevys still around, but I don't know if any of them are large trucks. I will check, and if he has anything, I will let you know.
