For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 25 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 25 | Found the truck at the local junkyard. The cab/fenders/etc are white and it has a dark green stakebed body. I don't know how it runs as far as noises, oil pressure, clutch, etc. The engine is the original numbers matching 366 tall deck V8 with a 4BBL Holley. The transmission is either a Spicer or Clark 5 speed with reverse all the way to the left, and all the way up like you're shifting to first in a regular truck. It won't go into 5th or 1st gear though. It has a tandem axle 2 speed rear. All the tires are are good and hold air. Most of 'em are 10.00-20 Hercules tires and are on cast spoke split rims that just slide over the wheel hub and are held on by clamps with big lugnuts. It has three gas tanks: the in-cab tank that smelled like fresh gas when I took the cap off, and two huge saddle tanks that I didn't check. The body is kinda shot and rusted, and the roof is the worst area for rust from the cab marker light gaskets leaking. This thing is awesome, I've never seen one like this here in south Texas. I've been looking for one of these to make a welding/gin pole truck out of. I know the owner of the yard and he's been letting me pull parts off it for free, so I figured i'd try to buy it since it's in OK shape. Anyway, what would be a fair asking price for this truck? I forgot to add that it has full air brakes. Are these systems a pain in the [censored] to work on?

That vintage with he dayton style wheels you proably will have to pull the whole wheel hub assembly to replace the shoes but the adjustment is easy usually just a 9/16 wrench needed. Dayton wheels means an easier time finding suitable replacements if any are in rough shape
Is it a tandem set up with 1 axle live and the other a tag axle? or is it a full twin screw? I'm not too familar with gas tandems of that era. As far as it's value it's whatever you feel comfortable with.
The transmission may free up when oil has been circulated a little. it's hard too get an idea with out the truck running | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,885 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,885 | Try to get it running if you can. The trans will probably shift OK once the gears move a little. Right now, the synchronizers probably aren't positioned in a place where they'll mesh. That's not uncommon on some of the big rig trannies. It would be very unusual to find a twin-screw rear with 2-speed axles, so I think you'll find that one of them, probably the rear, is a non-driving "tag" axle. Air brakes are no big deal, once you get familiar with their operation. The direct-swap tubeless tire for a 10.00-20 tube type is an 11-22.5. That would require changing wheels, however. The overall height of those two sizes is equal, so there would be no change in speed or ride height.
Good luck! Jerry

I'm going to try to talk to the owner and work out some sort of deal and try to get a price set. I'm only 17 so I'm going to see if he will let me work in the yard for a while to kind of knock some $$$ off. I'm not really sure about how the rear end is set up. I couldn't get a good look at it because it's parked in 5 foot tall johnson grass and there's a lot of snakes around there. I might try to get it running if he will let me, and if the brakes work I might try to drive it around the yard. I don't think there is an auxillary transmission, there's only one shifter coming out of the floor. I think it has a PTO for a hydraulic pump on the side of the tranny though. I didn't know you could get tubeless rims/tires for this type of rim. They look exactly like the rims on this truck, except they only have 5 spokes, not 6 like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chre...QQitemZ4565721316QQrdZ1#ebayphotohosting

Tube type rims are flat across the inside of the rim. Tubeless have a raised portion in the mid part of the rim. HRL's size designations are correct.( as he did road service for a while and could proably tell many storys of mismatchs) | | | | | Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 25 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 25 | OK, cool. I'm not really worried about the split rims though. There's a tire place here that will work on 'em.

I have to have a CDL since it has air brakes, so I'll just have to keep looking for one with hydraulic brakes. Dammit. I know where there's a 69 c50 box truck with a 350/5 speed/single rear axle with hydraulic brakes, but I don't think the owner will sell it.

There were hundreds of them hauling grain in Texas back then. Spoke wheels were kind of standard back then. It is really too much truck for a welding truck. It probably has a Neway drag axle. You would spend half of your life stuck with a drag axle. And if it is indeed a Neway, they had to cut the rear spring hangers off to equalize the springs It sounds like it has a lot of parts that I could use like the straight air axles, saddle tanks and a Neway drag axle. I would be very interested in the thing to part out. I have no interest in the motor or transmission. If you think the guy wants to get rid of it, shoot me an email. [email protected] I am in Fredericksburg and getting it up here would be no problem. | | |
