as i posted earlier, i started the changeover of the 51 cabover to 12 volts. the generator is mounted in afganistan, which means i can't get there from here. i had shoulder surgery last year,and although my recovery has been remarkable, there are about 2 angles i just can't do. both angles are involved in pulling the generator, so i decided to go at it from the front-------by yanking everything that got in my way. the grill came out tonight, and i'm glad i decided to do what i did. all the sheetmetal is coated with very light rust, and now, with everything apart, i can treat it, prime, and repaint. i want to make this area tough as nails, as it will almost never see a car wash, and indiana salts the hell out of it's roads and now has started spraying this goop in the winter that causes a real nasty type of corrosion that eats metal much more efficiently that good old salt. i'm open for suggestions as to what you guys would do in this situation, especially since i don't have alot of money. i can't spend any cash until the heat comes off of my stash from the great train robbery.

i think this is going to be the ongoing plan. everytime i disassemble body parts i'm gonna clean and coat. i am leery of products that claim i can just paint over rust and forget it. rust never sleeps.

your input is appreciated.

yeah i know, the body shop section, but i thought big truck guys might have a different approach.

I use a product called SEM Rust Seal.It requires some rust to be present. It turns the rust into a black primer, and it seems to work. I cake it on, where it doesn't show, with a brush and let it do its thing. I used it on some heavily rusted leaf springs just to see how long it would take to come back. A year later still no rust,

I understand your reluctance with the rust preventative paints as it seems nearly everything is over-rated these days. But I can only relate my own good experience with POR15. That stuff is tough and sticks like glue so don't ever get it on you. Pure hell to get off.
