The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Paint and Body Shop sealant for new windshield install

I'm about ready to tackle installation of my windshield and rear glass, 1953 half ton. I've read the shop manual, and have searched past threads. I would like to know what windshield sealant you guys have used, and recommend. Also, if you can provide any tips or advice that you think might help me, I'll really appreciate it.

Mike Burns Iv'e never been able to see where GM ever put sealant on cab glass,a used back glass from the junk yard comes out easily after you knife the rubber out of the way.

It’s in the 48 thru 53 shop manual, in the body section. Specifically, it’s on page 1-4. It only calls for sealant for the windshield. It also soecifically says that no sealant was used on the back windows.

I had my glass installed with no sealant, all new rubber gaskets and they leaked ! Maybe its the new rubber!, a little sealant no more leaks and never hardens . I don't know my tuck is a 56 maybe you need nothing

Ditto on my 1954 trucks.

The instructions in the shop manual definately call for sealant on the windshield. I think that you guys just confirmed it.

The book says to run a 3/16 bead on the outside of the pinch weld flange, all the way around, prior to doing anything else. then, if I remember right, it calls for shooting a little bead under the rubber in the glass groove too, after the install.
