I'm building a 49 gmc with a 22000 pound weight rating, (Ser. no. FC 303)I've been under the assumption that due to the high weight, it would cost an arm and a leg to register every year. Can any one prove or disprove this assumption? I live in california, but am moving to michigan as soon as I finish this beast. I'm 24 years old and on my way to a slightly late engineering education, so if the cost will be too high, I might consider, shall we say, alternatives..........thank you for any replies. to add a detail, I need to have no restriction on the registration, so if there is some cheap antique vehicle reg price, with a milage limit or something, I would be interested to hear about it, but it wouldn't really do me any good as I will be driving it every day when I'm done. thanks again

Here in Iowa, you chose how many tons you want to register your truck for. I only put 6 ton license on mine since that's about all the old six can handle and I'm not usually more than 2 miles from home. You may want to go to the license plate office and ask about Californias' policies,

In NY you can declare a gross weight less than what's listed on the vehicle ID plate.The gross on my 45 2 ton Chevy is 13,500,registered it for 6000 gross.This flat bed truck weighs 4450 lbs on the scale.I haul stuff,but not usually anything over 1500 lbs.I believe,maybe, anything over 10,000 gross is subject to state DOT regulations.

When I purchased my Dodge in California, it had Historical plates. It too has a 22k GVW. Now here in Washington I have Collector plates and once you regester it that wat you never have to pay again. I have Collector plates on my Cadillac, my GMC and the Dodge.

You have options usually...

An update- it seems that if I get the truck weighed, then I can declare my wieght to be under 10000 pounds and avoid the weight fees. thanks to all who responded. this makes my life much easier.

Just don't get caught weighing more than your registered weight.

Hey 49gmc. where at on your truck did you find that gvw. of 22000lb. A FC303, is a 300 series 1 1/2 ton GMC, rated at 15000lb. gvw. 350 series 2 ton GMC's have a gvw. of 16000lb., 400 series 2 1/2 ton 18000lb. gvw., 450 series 3 ton 19500lb. gvw., & 470 series 3 1/2 ton GMC 22000lb. gvw. My fire truck has an antique tag..it never expires and has no weight restriction it cost 25 bucks

Spanky, maybe we got crossed up between cargo weight and truck + cargo weight. I got my info from the serial number plate and it goes like this:"serial fc 303 xxxx
certified net horsepower- 89.5 at 3000 rpm
maximum gross weight- 13000
maximum gross combination weight- 22000"

Does that tag carry use restrictions, such as to or from historical vehicle events or any thing like that?

the tag does not carry restrictions...the insurance i have does. it says not to be driven daily. but has no mileage restrictions.
