Hi there. I've been looking for an old Apache for a while, finally ready to pull the trigger. I like the GMC versions more but both are good. Most of what I have seen available on Craigslist are either rust heap pack rat nests for 6-7K or fully restored rat rods or classics for north of 20K. I finally found a truck that runs and looks good to my eye for a price I can afford. I am planning on going to see it but there are some issues that I don't know how concerned I should be about.

The boards in the bed are rotted away and there are some small paint bubbles on the other side of the flareside bed so I know some rust has gotten through. There are some small holes in one of the cab corners which I know is one of the problem areas for these trucks.

I am OK with a project, it can be driven as-is and I can tinker and fix things as I go. The rust is new territory for me though.

Bed wood is not a problem. You can buy the complete setup, or make your own. See Mar-K out of OK. Rust in the cab corners is SOP for these trucks. You can buy new cab corners, cut the old ones out, and weld the new ones in or fabricate your own patches from sheet metal. I would check those paint bubbles closely. Look under the truck with a flashlight to see if the rust is more extensive than the paint is revealing. That may help drop the price. Or, it may help you decide to pass on buying the truck.

thanks for the advice. I have some photos and video from the seller from under the truck and it doesn't look terrible to me but it's all new territory for me too. I plan on checking it out in person next week.

Welcome to Stovebolt. Sounds like a good project.....but with any rust figure it to be at least 25% worse than you see. Good luck, any questions just post in the garage forums. Good luck.

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.

I ended up passing on the truck. Lots of bubbles under the paint and some rust inside the cab up high. I am going to keep an eye out for a less rusty AZ project, ideally a 55-56 GMC 1/2 ton.
