For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 6 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: May 2005 Posts: 6 | I'm new here and am hoping to find some parts and info. I have a 1947 GMC COE, with a 318 inline six, a five speed tranny and a two speed rear end. it also has air brakes. It has sat for quite a few years and kids broke all the glass and gauges. So those are on my wish list. the thing I need ASAP is the gear reduction starter. it hung up while it was running. It's a Delco Remy 1108451 6M19. If anyone can guide me in locating one, it would be great. Thanks for the help. There is a rebuilder in Phoenix who does this kind of work so I imagine there has to be someone closer to you who can do it. Is this truck a Cannon Ball model?

I found a rebuilder in Tacoma and the starter is in his hands. Now it's just finding the rest of the stuff. I've been told this is a commercial model and thats why I couldn't get the right starter. I now have two spares for my 53 2 ton Chevy cat truck. Glad to find a spot to talk old iron. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,777 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,777 | Most of the glass on that model will be flat, and can be cut by any good automotive glass shop. I'm not sure about the windshield. Just be sure they use the sandwich-type safety glass, not regular plate glass. I doubt if a reputable glass shop would do that anyway! If there's not enough of the old windows left to use as a pattern, carefully cut out a cardboard template for the glass shop to use as a pattern, but be sure to allow for the thickness of the gasket. If you've gone pokin' around the Garage, you probably already know aoubt the other interesting things going on here 24 hours a day. You'll meet people from everywhere around the world.
Thanks, fellers, for gettin' right to Ironjake's questions.
And if you can crawl out form under the old COE long enough to take some pictures, there are a few 'Bolters who drool and get twitches every time they see a COE.
Drivin' down a 2 lane country road in a stovebolt.....cowboy, it don't get no better than this!

It has a 318 inline and the exhaust manifold is falling apart. Any idea who might have one? I forgot to mention that I also have a 53 2 ton Chevy that I use to haul my dozer and I have a 50 Chev 1/2 ton that I got at age 14. at 46 and older than dirt, that ain't too bad. Thanks for the help. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,144 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,144 | Your saying 318 inline just to be sure is that a gas motor? I don't think they were putting the diesels in that early If it were diesel the parts are still available. 6-71's were produced from the 40's thru 80's at least. With 53 series coming in a little later. The reason I was asking was the 6-71 most common was the 238 whereas the 8V-71 base was the 318. They were set to run about 2100rpm but a lot of folks set the govenor 2600 or better, run fine plenty of oil leaks. Spanky proably has better dates on the engines and when they went into COE trucks. | | |
