Different from previous '58 283 I've seen such as oil dipstick on the right instead of the left. also some more modern emission equipment. I looked up some engine I.D. numbers on the Americanclassic.com site mentioned in previous postings. The stampings on the front right side of the block are large figures -VO712TCK and small print 1CF720419. The only thing I can match up are the CF for some years about 1960 and that indicates a 283. Does anyone know if that's correct and what all the other numbers and letters mean? | | |

PCV insead of vent tube. I wouldn't expect anything else. The air pumps and filter boxes and all those hoses started a few years later. I don't have a resource for checking numbers, but I'm wondering if its not a 283?

bob - I know that the dipstick was on the 'wrong' side on some bigger trucks, and most later pollution stuff will fit right onto an earlier engine - look for casting number at rear of drivers side just in front of bellhousing - can usually read it w/ a piece of mirror if the blocks not toooo dirty - will tell if it's a 283 or what

I also thought it was strange how small the spark plugs are. I need to buy a 5/8" plug wrench to get them out so I can start analyzing this motor. | | |
