My daughter (17 years old) just used her summer job money to buy an old Chevy truck. We're picking it up tomorrow. My research has me believing it's a 1948 6400 made in NY. The first part of the serial number is 2RW-D. It's somewhat rough, but it's a five-window, has a factory AM radio, and decades ago belonged to a wrecking yard owned by a good friend of my dad's. I'm a lot more familiar with the 67-72 Chevys, since I have a '68 K20, a 69 K10, a 72 C10 and a '72 K10 burb. This is a new adventure for both me and my daughter. She has been wanting something in this body style since she was about 12, and she worked and saved her own money to buy it.

We haven't really looked at it close enough to make solid plans on moving forward. We have discussed using all the original chassis, and we have also discussed buying a newer chassis to put it on, giving it modern brakes/steering/axles/etc...

I'm certain I'll have a million questions along the way. Already started digging through these forums trying to gain a base knowledge of the beast. I already have a burning desire to see what kind of rims I have and if they are the 'widowmakers"!

Attached a couple pics of the beast.

We welcome your family to the Stovebolt world. If it’s your daughter’s truck you need to get her logged on here for a hearty welcome. shake

From what I can see you don’t have the dreaded RH5 widow makers. Others more knowledgeable than me will be along soon.

Welcome to the forum! I second Martin’s suggestion about your daughter joining the ‘bolt. It would great if your daughter started a “Project Journal” on this forum to document your progress. Reading a journal from a ladies prospective is definitely interesting. In any case, nice project and we’re here to help!

Welcome to the Bolt! wave

I agree it's a 1948 based on the chassis serial number 2RW D

2 = Tarrytown, NY
RW = 1948 6400
D = April build month

The title may have the engine serial number on it which was common back then. It's found on the passenger side next to the distributor.

Looks like a fun project thumbs_up thumbs_up

I'm working on getting her set up. She can't decide on a user name (teenagers)...
Picked it up today. Took a few pics. Power is out across half the county, so I'll have to post pics later.

I think a build thread from her is a good idea.

This all is very helpful, I am quite exited to be able to show everyone it getting back on the road and the process of it, i understand quite some of it will be very difficult such as finding the brakes considering they do not make the type I need anymore. There is also quite some body work we need to fix up. I am so exited to start working on this monster of a truck, and I defiantly can't wait to get it on the road which might take some time but that is okay with me. When I get back up to it, I will take some more interior photos to show you guys. Also I am still thinking but any color suggestions for the truck.

As you confront problems be sure to go to the proper area of this site and ask away. Regarding the brakes, there is a large truck shop in Phoenix called Phoenix Brake and Clutch. If you have all the parts to your brake system they will be able to reline brake shoes, turn the drums, arc the shoes to the drums, reline cylinders, etc. You will likely be in good shape. Keep us posted!

That's good they are in Phoenix. I had wondered about where I could get shoes relined. Thanks for that info!

ckhd Welcom to big bolt,great truck you have tires that are up, glass,cab corners,and a lot more going for you ! I have a dump truck same thing. Would suggest that you service your vacuum brake booster early in the project. Those have a leather cup that gets dry, use hydraulic jack oil from your parts store,my 2 are both over 70 yrs. old work good. My 2 cents GOOD LUCK !! Read the big service book,tells you so much !!

The color that's on it now makes it stand out pretty good. You may want to consider keeping that.

Otherwise, check out the trucks in the gallery-both the old and new one. You might see something there that you like better. Mine is blue.

Regarding the paint I wouldn't touch it, the patina and lettering on the doors are awesome. People pay big money to have a fake patina painted on.
