I getting back to starting up my truck had some set backs , I broke the FRED rule I filled the radiator with coolant before it was ready to be filled with coolant, The truck boiled over and spewed most of the coolant out so was thinking of filling with distilled water instead of tap until it’s ready for coolant. I believe that tap water sitting in the radiator for so long crusted up and was part of the reason my water pump started to leak Thanks
How long, what type of radiator (aluminum or brass/copper), new pump or old, did you have coolant with the water or just straight water, where in CA? Distilled water is preferable if you have tap water with a high mineral content. I'm certain somebody will show up and tell you that your tap water was what caused your pump to leak (and of course thinning hair, later life acne, neuritis, neuralgia and lumbago), but it won't be me. I've seen pumps go bad from people running straight tap water with no coolant (anti-rust, anti-freeze, etc), but even that takes a while unless the pump is on the way out the door already.

It sounds like you've got a solution looking for a problem. Most of the time an overheat- - -boil over situation on an initial startup is the result of trapped air in the engine block resulting from an improper cooling system filling procedure. I always leave the upper thermostat housing off, and fill the radiator until the coolant level comes up to the bottom of the housing. That eliminates air getting trapped in the cylinder head and creating a hot spot. If you're determined to use some sort of exotic water, just go to Walmart or some other big grocery store and fill one of those 5 gallon carboys with reverse osmosis "filtered" water. Jerry

It’s the original radiator that a radiator shop went through some time back Had tap water with a small amount or coolant that was sitting in the truck for a couple of years.now has new water pump, top and bottom hoses, new overflow tank, Was messing with the 2 carbs to many situation Just thinking distilled water until all issues taken care of HRL distilled water is in every shelf in stores here in so California even the dollar store
I see now that you are talking about easily available bottled water. Real distilled water is hard to come by. I was working for an airshow and the USAF required distilled water. We found a laboratory that could supply proper distilled water.

Check the label on that stuff in the bottles on the grocery store shelf. If it says "Bottled By P.T. Barnum", better pass it up! Jerry

Gord&Fran You don't get distilled water at Walmart ?? I buy 2 gallons of prestone,2 gallons distilled. Mix-up 50% solution top-off with it till gone, make more.
You can run tap water, get it started and do what ever you are going to do with it, then dump it. It will cost pennies, save driving around town, and keep plastic jugs out of the trash. I run tap water in all the new engines I start. I also pull the drains while still hot so the heat dries out the block and radiator. It can now go into storage knowing no liquid is setting in it.
I had a friend who used to supply me with some very high quality "distilled water"- - - - - -it had about a 60% ethanol content. Sadly, her passed away about a year ago! Jerry

Am I wrong to say ethanol is made from corn? Isn’t that what Granny used in the old truck when they needed some fuel?

Ethanol can be made from virtually any fruit or vegetable matter- - - -corn, rye, barley, potatoes, grapes, oranges, apples, pears, peaches, agave plants, rice, and virtually any other grain or vegetable known to mankind. Do fill with coolant until done . Unlike my self bought coolant filled it up and had a bad hose replaced hose refilled it than water pump started to leak refilled again didn’t burp the system then had a boil over than spewed out. So that’s why the store bought distilled water question Plain tap water I believe killed my water pump.
)atroca52 Maybe your seal stuck to the water pump shaft from not enough lube from anti-freeze,if it,s pretty young might free up but may cost anti-freeze to find out...catch 22 !!
Don’t know what the FRED rule is, but I get my distilled water from the sky. It may have some other dissolved things in it, but none of the rocks that are present in our tap water.
He refused to explain what the FRED rule is so I assume it's a rude acronym for something.
No not really a friend FRED just says don’t put the coolant in until it’s all done otherwise spending money on expensive green liquid like another stovebolter would say when he would have issues he like to say his truck was being grumpy that day and nothing seemed to go right. So not really a rule but a saying.
So today got something’s done on my truck today Attempted to do the duel carburetors and failed and I know why will leave that there Got the stock manifold on carburetor on linkage solved, put a new thermostat, radiator cap, fuel line from fuel pump to carburetor, new vacuum advance line on. got the truck running needs a heavier throttle return spring which I have but the truck did a boil over again my truck has never had this issue in the past. Go back a bit and I had to put a new water pump and of course new fan blade the original one wouldn’t fit new fan belt too new radiator hoses upper and lower The radiator as I’ve said in past post has been gone trough by a radiator shop sometime back .so now what direction do I need to look at for this new boil over situation? Oh and I added a shiny over flow tank . Thanks

to my knowledge they are I’ve flushed the motor several time I did put a big electric fan in front on the radiator blocking any air flow if I use the fan which is an old one it drains my battery
This morning I removed the radiator hoses flushed radiator a few times water flowed out clear and fast removed the thermostat housing flushed water a few times as well all clear flowed out fast Looked like the replacement lower hose had a flat spot in a bend so maybe it was restricting water flow bought a flex hose and hopefully it’s part of process and elimination next I will remove old electric fan
Distilled water here is $1 to $1.10 a gallon. I use it in my C-Pap machine but use other when I have to...even tap water. Why is it so scarce in Canada?? Curious minds want to know.

I don't think it is scarce in Canada. Readily available in many container sizes at grocery stores.
Bottled water comes in all sorts of categories- - - -"Distilled"- - -"De-ionized"- - - -"Filtered"- - - -"Reverse Osmosis"- - - -and plain old "somebody else's tap water". The late, great comedian Dave Gardner had a gig about that- - - -"I was in Hot Springs Arkansas a few days ago- - - -watching those dumb rednacks selling WATER to a bunch of smart yankees!" Dave had a way of getting right to the point! Jerry

I find it amusing that the guy from Boiling Springs has to buy distilled water! Capture that condensate!
It seems my info is out of date and distilled water is now readily available here; but not for a buck a gallon! Probably more available now that it seems some people are afraid of tap water even though the water is tested and certified as OK to drink by the local health dept.
As Jerry points out the term "distilled water" seems to include a lot of stuff.
For a radiator, it probably doesn't matter. For a battery, distilled water is recommended, but most batteries are sealed units today.
I know, I know. I agree with Jerry but for the .50 cents worth I use a week its a matter of convenient. Back when I was gravure printing/plating we did out own. However, I have used bottle water and just plain old spigot tap water. I do take a couple bottles with as I never know when I have to stay at the cheap motels for few winks and don't even want to touch the faucet...let along use the water!!!
Heck, back in the day when I was cutting pulpwood, think mid 60's, I actually drank from a mud puddle more than once. If you've never done that you have never been really thirsty. I've probably got enough mud in me to grow corn..........and distill it

Thank you, definitely don't drink it! My shop dehumidifier pulls out up to 70 pints a day. It's a cheep easy source for pretty good distilled water. I use it for just about everything including in my ultrasonic cleaner. Keep in mind that distilled water will not boil and can be brought above 212 degrees at normal pressure. Once an impurity is introduced it can violently boil and basically explode.

Who gave you that idea? Of course distilled water will boil. Impurities just raise the boiling temperature a bit. The only way it will "explode" is if pressure is suddenly reduced, as in unlocking the lid on a pressure cooker under pressure. That would be a bad idea.

Latroca52 You never told about the Fred rule,Im sure we have all broken it too !!!
Not really a rule but basically do put coolant until finished work on project more often than not will have to drain it or like my case didn’t get air bubbles out and than a boil over wasted in the driveway
