I have a 1950 Chevy 216 4 on the floor with a 5.13 rear end gearing. I top out at about 45 mph. Does any one else have this type of setup? I can bearely keep up with traffic on back roads! Engine runs strong and has not had any problems. Thanks

Welcome to the stovebolt and welcome to the biggest problem of a stock bolters life. That's about all you'll get out of a 216 and that should only be for a limited time. 216's don't have alot of horse power or oil pressure so they need alot of TLC to make them last. You'll get alot of advise here so keep checking in often. (take mine with a grain of salt usually)

I had the same problem with my 51 1 ton pickup. topped out at 45 and sounded like all @#X% was gonna break loose. i put in a 235 i got for a hundred bucks, and a pumpkin out of a 72 3/4 ton, and i can handle any driving situation now.4:10 gears were perfect for me.

Some vendors offer packages to change your rear end gears without putting a newer model rear underneath. I've seen ads for overdrive units that bolt to the back of the trnsmission. there are also period auxilary transmissions. Brown Lipe etc. Good luck enjoy the ride

Yeah Jake -- a special welcome from the Maryland Stovebolters (also includes Bill Marlow and Doug Petersen).

I'd come up and visit, but I have a '49 with a splasher and a 4-speed and it would take a long time (45 MPH top speed, you know).

So again, wlecome and as has been said, be sure to ask questions -- that's what we're here for!

Regards,
John in St. Mary's County (America's First County!)

Your tire size figures into it too. It probably had 17" wheels from the factory with a tire diameter of 33" to 34".

Thanks for all your input and welcomes. I figure 45 is a safe speed with no power steering no power brakes and bias tires (7.00 -17). Any faster than that I don't think the 8800 Lb. truck would handle to well! Thanks Again Jake

My 64 C-60 is governed at 60 MPH. Motor isn't working that hard I suspect it would run faster with no prob.
