I want to change from power steering to manual steering, in my '79 C30. Is all I have to change is the steering box or is there more work involved. (There must be more work involved, right?) Thanx in advance

Disconnect the pressure and return lines from the pump. Connect the pressure line to the return line at the power steering box. Keep it filled with power steering fluid. Works fine. I drove my Land Cruser with a GM box like this for a couple of years before I got the pump installed, without any problems.

Thanx once again! This has to be the best website for info on chevy trucks!

I'll try the free method first, until I save up the cash for a manual box.

i have had the same question. i have a pacer front end under my 54 3100 and it has always leaked and i have thought of changing to manual, but i worrying about the steering effort. also will a mustang power rack bolt up to this setup? i can get a rebuilt pacer manual unit from auto zone for 100.00. any comments would be welcome. ron

WeB Old, I had a pacer unit in a 41 Chevy sedan I built. The pacer Pwr. Stg. unit leaked badly. Replaced it with a manual mustang 2 rack and it drove very nicely. As I recall, I of course has to build different brackets to hold the rack, but I also had to use tie-rods from a late model T-Bird as the mustang rack and stock tie-rods were too short for the Pacer rack. Hope that helps.

This may be old advice, but if the rack/tie-rod combo are too short, make sure the rack-end pivot points line up between the upper and lower control arm-to-frame pivot points, or you may get some unpleasant bump-steer. Rack extensions are available for mustang racks.
