The previous owner had put chromed wheels on it with baby moon hubcaps. i got the original wheels and hubcaps. did they come out with chromed hubcaps or were they painted? If painted what color?the hucaps i have are painted and rusty. i can clean them up and repaint. The only ones i see from veners are chrome. Thanks

Although it doesn't mention hubcaps, it indicates that the bumper was painted Anvil Gray, so by association, hubcaps would also have been painted the same color from the factory. If your painted hubcaps are in decent shape, you can definitely clean them up and paint them. Anvil Gray is PPG code 32983 per Tim Lederman's excellent color tech tip page (I think that code under '54 is a typo)

GM baby moons 1940 thru 1955, for cost savings, used the same steel base and a same separate skin (brass?). The skin surface stamping changed as required by the design department.

Not impossible to weld, but harder than plain steel. Like the headlight rings, some are chrome plated brass and some are stainless steel. If brass, they would evaporate pretty quickly if heated with a torch to steel welding temperature.

Shopline 32983 JAU single stage urethane. PPG was very helpful in finding the paint and a local distributor. | | |
