Hey all,

Looking to identify an engine block casting of 3835335. Some sources state that this is a 1942-49 235 number, while at least one source states that it is a 216. Leaning towards the 235 as at least one reference is from a paper copy of a Chevrolet manual.

Any help clearing up this confusion?

My list shows it as a 216.

What Chevy manual shows it as a 235?

Jim Carter lists it as a 235.

I found another list showing it as a 235.

My list is probably incorrect.

Keep in mind a casting number is not a part number
A casting is pre-machined shape of metal
A part has been prepared post casting and is ready to install on the vehicle
In a few rare parts the two can be the same
But that would even preclude painting

Often for simple things the part number will be one off from the casting number
Sometimes when looking in parts books the casting number will be listed in the part description to help identify a part
I have seen instances where a casting is machined differently and can be found in 4 different part numbers

Engine heads were definitely machines different ways for different engines
But blocks I haven’t come across one but it could be possible
Maybe that is why the casting number can show up as multiple engines?

Here's a copy of Group 0.033 Cylinder Block from my 1951 Parts Book.

It lists 3835335 as a 235 used from 1942-47

could be a typo that was transcribed when the author made this list

A 1941-49 216 or 235 will be designed for a full side cover.
A 1950 and later 235 will have a short side cover.

I do believe this engine in question is in fact a 235.

My '46 truck 235 (splasher) also had '235' stamped on the side of the pan, look for that. I still have one of those pans if anyone is interested.
