Hello there. Phak 1 gave the place to order 16" rims for our 3100's. What is the procedure for prepping to paint red over black powder coat? Doc.

Hey Doc, you have the same idea as I do, “Red Wheels”! Painting over powder coating is definitely possible. You will still need to prep the powder coating as you would for any other paint. Here is a [LINK] that explains the process.

I would recommend lightly blasting the powder coating to roughen it. Hand sanding a wheel would probably not get at all the nooks and crannies. I assume that you're talking about NEW undamaged powder coating. If there's any rust that's started to creep underneath, you'd be better off removing the powder coating and starting from bare metal, IMO. I had a bracket that was powder coated that got a rock chip in it and started to rust, by the time I chased all the rust off, there wasn't any powder coating left. The coating peeled off pretty easily.

If you're smart enough to take it apart, you darn well better be smart enough to put it back together.

...similar experience as Kevin. I had some big brackets powder coated and simply did not like the outcome on the color and some light spots seemed to bleed through. Luckily for me I have a blasting cabinet and was able to blast it back off for re-coating........but it was not easy!! If you don't have the where with to blast them yourself, take them back to the powder coating guy. Save yourself some pain!

Years ago, I removed powder coating from a set of wheels with a torch. Didn't need to get it too hot either. The coating cracked and popped off pretty easily.
