Nearly anything could be done, but as to interchangeability I'd say no.

Just use the foot switch to energize the later model solenoid switch or a magnetic relay. Unless somebody looks under the hood they won't know the difference.

With pics. I remember discussing the design somewhere. Will try to remember. (That is a difficult task now a days.)
