Getting ready for an engine and transmission pull in my '48 Chevy 1-Ton with a 216 and I'm looking for recommendations for a leveler. I see that some are rated @1500 lbs., others @ 2000 and am wondering if there is any real world difference between them. From your experiences, will the 1500 lb. rated levelers work well and which do you prefer?

Thanks, Jim

Yes, there is probably a real difference between them.

However, the engine plus the transmission probably does not weigh 1,000 lbs (the engine most likely weighs under 700 lbs)?

I'd rather have too much capacity than not enough.

Make sure you lube the leveling screw and run it the full length before you use it.
I also agree with Mark, get the heavier one. You may need it for a heavier engine sometime.

Thanks for the replies and tips! I guess I'm questioning whether the Harbor freight one is actually 2000lb capacity when it seems comparable to many of the 1500lb ones like the one from the OTC brand. That's why I was hoping for some real world feedback from forum members on the ones they have used. If one is clearly better than the rest, that's the one I want. I also have a couple of engines to pull on some MGBs but I hope this is the last big truck I have to fool with.

Look for one with an Acme thread on the screw, not a "V" thread. The Acme is square shouldered and load bearing.

I was at a Northern Tool outlet the other day and saw this load leveler, its' rated at 1500 Lbs. It looked to be pretty solid built for the money. https://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200640936_200640936 , it's on sale as well.

That looks good, especially the price.

Used one just like that to put the V8 in my ‘61 C-10 without removing any body panels.🛠
