Need some help on locked glove box. Locksmith says to grind off catch and bottom part sticking down then can remove nut holding tumbler in. I have not seen replacement parts for outside, only tumbler is available. Any thoughts on this. I don't need it to lock only want it to open and close. Thanks. Bill

I have the glove box door off while doing my restore. As I said just want push button to work to open and close. Not worried about locking

I find it hard to believe your “Locksmith “ can’t pick the lock if you take the door into his shop. When I was a kid we used to pick em with a paper clip. Good luck.

I suggest looking for a locksmith that has access to the ring of keys used back then and still by ones lucky enough to have a set. One of the keys on that ring should be able open the lock without damaging any of the parts.

But, first, you might get lucky with simply soaking the lock in a penetrating oil a couple days and break loose whatever crud is gumming up the tumblers.

Find the oldest Locksmith in town with the most cluttered shop and you’ve got your man.

We do not even have one within 60+ miles.

The "local" ones are pretty good dealing with household door locksets.

Bill, there is a guy named Jarvis who list his lock services in the VCCA magazine. i sent him mine years ago and he fixed me up asap......I can get his contact number if you like and he was reasonable back them.....and sent me a note telling me how to take it apart if needed...and sent me a couple keys back with it.

....wait. I found it.

My 37 has a locked glovebox with no key. I was just hoping to just find a good locksmith, but there are several of the vintage sources that carry the unlockable units.to get the old one off the door if you're not worried about ruining the lock should be easy with a dremel with a cutoff wheel and a steady hand getting started. It's pot metal. I am still looking for a repro locking unit as mine is pretty pitted but haven't run across a source yet and would like to get it keyed to match the ignition.

You can cut a hole in the bottom, it's just pressed paper, reach up from back side and remove two screws that hold the striker on. Then you can carry the whole glove box door to a GOOD locksmith or remove the one screw that retains the latch mount sleeve and remove it. I can't remember if the latch will remove through the hole in the door if locked but a cut off wheel will remedy that---it's no good anyway.

Does the door key not fit it? They're supposed to match, door, ignition & glovebox, unless someone has changed one of more of them.
If you take the door lock out, there should be a 4 digit number on it near the shaft. Post that here and I can tell you how to cut a key to fit it.

While on topic, on '37's are door lock and glove box, rekeyable? My ignition switch was a universal which I replaced with original gm. Never had a key for door or glovebox. I'm assuming a good locksmith can pick, but is it rekeyable?

found a local old school locksmith that rekeyed my door to match my new ignition switch. He said the glovebox lock guts were toast but had a brand new one on his shelf with the keys but wants $125 for it. He showed me a used one on ebay for 200...geez. He winked as I left and said it'll be here when you get 'er all painted and shiny and gotta have it!
