After much searching, I still don't know what the code means on my replacement engine.
I was told it is a 270.
Is shorter than the GMC engine it replaced.
Code is C225232
as seen in attached photo.

If the engine is shorter than you original GMC engine, it is probably a Chevrolet 216/235/261 engine.

If it is a Chevrolet engine, here are locations of ID codes (if USA and Canada codes are in same locations):

low-pressure engine ID codes

high-pressure engine ID codes

Find your codes and post them here. Someone should be able to "decode" them.

Is this in your 53 Canadian-built GMC 9700? Post more pictures of the engine, and look for the casting numbers on block and head. Canadian trucks had many differences from their USA cousins, especially engines. Actually they had a better model numbering system.

Hy Alex Arrow, Please remember to tell us what year, make and size of truck (model designation) you are asking questions about. If Frank50 has it correct that you are asking about a Canadian 53 GMC 9700, that truck left the factory with a GMC full precision bearinged six cylinder engine, probably a 248 a 270 was an option. 248 engine serial numbers in Canada begin with the letter G sometimes a second letter before the numbers begin. The engine you showed us the serial number of is probably a Chevrolet, if you realize it is shorter than the engine that belongs there then it is most likely a Chevrolet engine. If you could post a larger picture of the engine showing the valve cover and the cylinder head we may be able to confirm the make of the engine, hope that helps.

Well, it is a '53 GMC 9700 Canadian model, but the engine is not. It is not original in neither this one or the '50 it came from. No clue what it is actually from. This is likely why I am having trouble deciphering it, since I don't know what year it is or if it came from the US.

It will need more cleaning if the other numbers are needed.

Finally found two more numbers. One by the starter is a little difficult to read but appears to be 3837004. On top tho the head next to the intake manifold is 3836848. The only other thing I found was an M in a square between the pump and distributor.

Edit: The first number gets me results in a search. Claims to be a 235.

USA decoding (Canadian might be the same):

3836848 1956-1963 235 head

3837004 1955-1957 235 block

"M" = ?

Hy Guys, the "M" is the foundry identification.

If you take the valve cover off, he casting date for the head will be at the inside edge, driver side, about the middle. It will start with a letter, and the some numbers.
