Can anyone tell me what is the proper transmission oil for my 1949 Chevy 3600 four-speed? Also, transmission seems to work well but the gearshift is very sloppy. Are there any rebuild kits that can address the sloppiness? Thanks! Tim

The '48-'51 Chevy Truck Shop Manual lists on page 0-5 the recommended lubricant as 90 wt. I prefer Red Line Oil MT-90, as it is synchronizer friendly, and works well in older transmissions.

Others can probably help better than I on the questions regarding shifter sloppiness.

From Novak's website:

"When filling your 420 with gear oil, we recommend that you select a conventional mineral oil or a para-synthetic in lieu of a full synthetic oil. Properly assembled manual gearboxes do not have the thermal strains seen by combustion engines or hypoid gears. Synthetic fluid in these gearboxes, while not harmful, is probably an economic waste.

Hypoid gear oil is sulphurized higher than transmission oil and can be mildly corrosive to the non-ferrous alloys used for synchros, bushings and thrust washers in these transmissions.

An 80W-90, API-GL5 or MT-1 rated fluid is very good. Some claim faster shifts from using a 50W engine oil in their transmission and we do not consider this to be contraindicated unless you operate your vehicle in a very warm environment."

Tim, I have to respectfully disagree with the recommendation of using GL-5 fluids for transmissions. The added Sulphur needed to make the GL-5 rating is generally corrosive to synchronizers, and any brass/bronze components, and not needed for other than hypoid rear ends and similar. A good GL-4 fluid is sufficient and synchronizer friendly. Further, fluids that are properly designed for transmission use have the right characteristics that promote smooth shifts. A typical GL-5 gear lube that is great for rear ends doesn't necessarily meet that, either.

Now, I'm not pushing the brand, as there are many choices, but here is a good white paper on the subject, FYI. Red Line MTL and MT-90 Tech Info.

Cheers!

Doug
