I have a 1953 3600 but seems to have a 1958-62 235 from a car. but in any case I am replacing the exhaust and intake manifold gaskets. Should I separate the intake and exhaust? Or can I just leave them together and take it down and get the surface milled? The heat flapper does seem to move freely.

Thanks

If you don't have a problem with the manifolds just leave them as they are. Consider using a Remflex manifold gasket, which is a thick compressable single gasket that can take up to 1/8 inch gap. They are somewhat pricey at around $40 but that is a lot less expensive than having a machine shop mill that long manifold.

Use a straight edge such as a long carpenter's level to check for misalignment between the two manifolds. Once you separate the two, it can be hard to get them back into proper alignment on re-installation. Leaving the four intake/exhaust bolts slightly loose while getting the manifolds snugged up to the head helps, then tighten them last.

Separating them you risk breaking off one or more studs with all the hassle that entails. If you don't have to, don't.

I will order a Remflex right now. I used them before, excellent gaskets.
