| | | | Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 1,644 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 1,644 | I found a 19-pin air needle scaler for sale online that I think might be just the thing to help me remove all the concrete-like road crud from the frame of my 1951 half ton I'm trying to coax into a street rod. The grease, mud and dirt has hardened into really thick, hard crud that's difficult to remove. Anyone have any experience with one of these and do they really work good?

It should work good on that crud. It may also leave real little dimples in the metal.
Very loud and it should not used on body metal without a lot of care.

They do peen the metal, so if the surface finish is important, it might be a good idea to use a less-aggressive cleaning method like a cup brush on an angle grinder. Eye and ear protection are a must- - - -those flying pieces of crud can cause some painful injuries and the noise is hard to tolerate.

A wire wheel or grinder can’t get in to corners, but a needle scaler can. VIDEO LINK HERE I mistakenly call it an air nibbler, but I meant needle scaler.

The trick it to adjust the air pressure down. If you do that you won't get as much peening. Works very well in corners and an initial degrease effort.

I used a serrated blade on it and it worked pretty well. That's another option for you, and you may already have one of those. I got mine from HF. link
