does anyone know of or installed a good aftermarket gas tank under the bed in a ad ?would love to get mine out of the cab.

I bought a 16 gallon plastic fuel cell from Summit, along with the mounting straps. I mounted the fuel cell behind the axle. I bolted 2 pieces of angle iron to the frame, and then I bolted the mounting straps to the angle iron.

I just cut a temporary hole in the bed (it could use replacing anyway) to fill it, but I will eventually buy the adapter that will allow me to fill it from the side instead of through the bed.

Another thing you will need is the fuel line. I ran -6 steel braided lines. I also had to get a few adapters.

I've heard of a lot of people just buying stock gas tanks from different vehicles and fabricating new mount locations under the bed. One thing you can do is to use your stock gas tank as a reserve tank, and the larger tank under the bed as the main tank. You could either switch manually with a valve or electrically.

Personally, I would just totally get rid of the huge bomb under my butt and go with a large under-bed tank or tanks.

I found a real nice tank at chevyduty.com but it costs $875.00. I was hoping to find something safe that wouldn't so much...

Used the 16 gal. from Summit, did just a little work to the cross members in the back (59) then had a machine shop make me a set of mirror polished SS straps. It is a real nice looking set-up. Ben

I am in the process of installing a 62 Impala tank in the rear of my 54. The tank has a 20 gallon capacity. It requires relocating the filler neck and figuring out the sending unit. Both of which are not difficult for someone with good fabrication skills. I looked through all the available gas tanks and this one is the best fit IMO. I left the rear crossmember in place and added a tube steel crossmember just in front of the new tank. The filler will be located in the left fender. It should look close to a stock intallation when I am finished.

The other day I was looking in a car mag. and came across Tanks Inc. They have several universal tanks as well as lots of accesories for doing the plumbing of the new tank. The prices are very reasonable. I wish I had known about them before I started my project. Their address is www.tanksinc.com. Give them a look, they might have something that will fit your needs.

I bought one of the underbed gas tanks from Tanks Inc. Really like it a lot. It was a perfect fit, no adjustments needed. We got an aluminum tank from them. Putting the gas filler in the bed.

David, Sorry It was Kustom Tanks not TanksInc. We bought it at a GoodGuys Chevy Show in Columbus Ohio a couple years ago. It was specificaly built for a AD pickup. I want to say it was like $290. A show special price. Sorry for the miss-info. I checked the brand when I got home from work today.

If you're just going to be doing a carb setup you might want to look into a 69 Mustang or Cougar tank, it almost a perfect fit, you'll have to do a little dimpling on one side but not much work and it looks good too. I've been looking for a tank for my EFI setup but the price is out of my budget, so I using the tank that specifically setup for my engine.

coach frank thanks for the reply, i've looked atkustom tanks also they might be the way to go. although i think they are around $450.00 . gotta love those show specials i,m kinda toying with the idea of maybe a fuel cell, but will probly break open the piggy bank and just do it. i,ve tried not to skimp on what i've wanted so far it has taken yrs so far on my 49 and will probly be a couple more before its on the road.thanks again to all for your input.......dave

FYI the tanks from tanks inc. come setup for in tank fuel pumps. Cost is from $215 to $275 depending on the tank.

I also went with a Summit 16 gal cell, it also came with a sender. Fabed up some angle and bolted the straps to them. Worked great and if I remember right it was under $200.00.

I wanted mine on the pass side, in steel to weld the stock 'old-cab mounted' modified 2'' filler to, under the bed, in front of the rear axle for safety so no rear ender accidents and fire issues, filled from the side in front of the fender, NOT behind the rear axle !!! There is about 4'' of skirting on the side to mount the filler to and allow the filler tube under the bedwood and above the frame section. It's 10''x11''x34'' @ 16 gallons, $225.00 and any gas sender unit will fit the standard hole. Made by Tanks Inc. I like my spare tire in the back w/ a crank down cable, it's much easier & better than the stock arm-bar to lower the tire.

A 69 or 70 Mustang tank is mentioned often. New ones are cheap on eBay. I like the idea of the filler neck in the center behind the licence plate. Has anyone done this and got details? Seems like the tank would have to be mounted pretty low to get the filler neck under the box.

My 72 is a weird deal - it has the tank in the cab, and twin saddle tanks! I might just go with the saddle tanks later on when I determine if they are not fully of sand and filth. I think with all that I can have 60 gallons of fuel! Must have been a reaction to the 73 gas crisis as they are definitely after market.

Has anybody tried the tank from cpp? Suppose to be no modifications for 55-59. Want $400 w/sending unit.

Frets, I have a stang tank in my 57 it's a great fit between the frame rails but it had to be a bed fill deal because of the tank being a top fill item. You would have to mount the tank dangerously low in order to fill it through the plate. I thought a G M plate fill tank might work but you don't see them at the swaps so I never got to measure one up

I bought the Stainless Steel tank from BrothersTrucks.com for $500.00 and it bolts right up to the frame behind the axel. Easy to install and recommend it to anyone who wants a easy install.

Why move it? more storage space? speaker box?

on the logic side: If you get hit hard enough in an accident to pop that tank, yer prolly dead already.

Just a thought...but the 1st gen Camaros had a "behind the plate angular fill tank"...I think it's a 16 gallon capacity too and they're readily available at speed shops...

The 1st gen camaro tanks are 18 gallon. I am using one in my 54.
