He also wants to run this on Saturday nights. I told him he may have a hard time with it, since it is a top load shifter. What do you guys think ?

I have a 68 C20 with a 465. The standard lever for the 465 is quite long, cutting it down would help. I replaced the original lever in my 68 with 435 lever out of a 69 GMC, had to tweak it a bit to clear the bottom of the dash. I also polished the part of the lever that drops into the shifting forks, didn't help a whole lot. If some one has some tricks I would sure like to hear them.

the main problem I have found with them besides slow shifting is if you realy push them hard
(drag racing ) thay will jam between 2nd and 3rd

For racing, a close ratio Muncie would be great for banging the gears. I'd keep the truck transmission for truck duties, hard to beat that super granny gear for a truck. Rock crawlers love it.

Man, it was indestructable, but a racing transmission, absolutely not. It was a truck tranny, and man, it was like shifting a 50 year old uhaul van. It was a bear that would not always find 3rd if you were in a hurry, not fun for cruising at all.
I agree with the others, tell him to switch to a close ration muncie, or go with something crate based from summit.
