I got it moving under its own power today, but there is more to do.
-The brakes need bled. Took fluid and didn't see any leaks. Felt some pressure, but not enough. There is also the matter of the rear right brake. The line to it was disconnected and sealed.
-Check the spark plugs since the wires needed replaced due to corrosion. There is also the choke to check as the pull knob feels stiff. It's running a little fast and used a lot of fuel. I also need to replace the carb gasket.
-Clean out the fuel tank before I attempt to use it. It looked okay inside, only a little dirty. Nice thing about having it in the cab!
-I've got some better tires lined up for it. That would be a good time to also check the brakes.
-Muffler, it has a straight pipe!
-Lights. Many of the little ones are broken or missing. It has already been converted to 12 volts!
-Have yet to try the hoist.
-Fix up the box and make it better so I can use it.
-Painting and such.
-Clean the cab, cover the seat and figure out what I will do for a headliner.
-More little things, but those are the most important things.
I forgot to take a photo of the door plaques. The engine will need cleaned before I get the ones off there.
What I really posting for: What about brake parts for a three ton? The post in here for brakes says only up to 2 tons, unless I missed something. Is there a decently priced website that ships to Canada?
LMC truck will ship to Canada and guarantee landed price so no brokerage surprises but they prob won't have 3 ton brake parts Napa will surprise you, both in what they can get for your truck, and also with how expensive the parts will be -s
Welp, that turned out to be a dud. Sure, the body, frame, engine, 12v conversion, etc. are good, but the box is ruined, hydraulic pump is toast and the real nail in the coffin: the back axle. Somehow, a previous user broke the drum and their 'fix' was to cut it off the hub. When I searched for replacement, no other truck had the same axle! Does this have some unique to the year axle or could it have been also replaced, like the engine did?
Either way, I'm no longer worried about it, has I got a similar '53 in much better condition that is mostly original. Should have it home soon and will post about it!
My wife just got me a Dana (think it's an S130) rearend for my '52 9700 GMC.
2003 ford F450. Simply unbolt hangers from the ford frame, it's the same width frame as the GMC. Mines not in yet, but looks to be a very simple swap, I'll end up with 4.88 gears, limited slip, and 19.5 rims with Radials. Just have to drill off my factory hangers off the frame, roll this under and bolt it up.
So, an easy option to go to (or, I also have possibly the same rear as you, that I'm not using) mine is an Eaton 2 speed.
Hy Alex Arrow and guys, I must have been away in Oregon when this topic was first started. At any rate a little education on Canadian GMC and Chevrolet Maple Leaf trucks, Canadian engines on which the serial number begin with the letter "G" are 248s. GMC 9700 series and Chevrolet Maple Leaf 1700 series are more often than not powered by GMC 248 engines whose serial numbers begin with the letter "G". There was an option available back in the day to install a 270 engine in the GMC trucks 9700 series.
