Excited to join the forums! I have what I believe to be a 1959 GMC 100 Stepside with the 270 inline six maybe you guys can tell me more about it. I think it might be the rare fleet option can anyone verify?

Here is the back story on the truck

When I first started dating my girlfriend I kept hearing about this "cool old truck" at family gatherings that her dad got from his grandfather, drove it home to Colorado from California 20 years ago and parked it in a field. Her brother in-law and uncles were always talking about it but never did anything about it, even her dad hardly knew anything about it other than his grandfather bought it new in California, it sat in a garage his entire childhood and one day he just got a call saying he could have it but had to come get it ASAP because the house was sold. After 3 years of listening to everyone talk about it like it was some ghost story I decided I had enough and I was going to get it. I called my girlfriends dad told him I was going to get it so I could tinker with it and see what it was all about. When I showed up I was pretty amazed that it was still in good shape and the mice and rats hadn't gotten into it.

Sorry for the long story, anyways yesterday I finally got her running and boy does she purr for not having run in over 20 years, all it took was a new fuel pump and I rebuilt the carb from a kit I found online. I ordered a whole bunch of parts but am having trouble finding a new water pump.

I would love to meet up with some other enthusiasts and learn more about this cool old truck

Very nice pick up! Check your local FLAPS or online sites (like RockAuto) I bet you might find a water pump easier than you think! If not, post in the SwapMeet. This is a great site for these old trucks. Welcome aboard!

If I'm not mistaken that's a commercial series truck, and will have a Chevy dash. But the truck is a GMC. Somebody will be along shortly to correct me in case I am wrong.

I have been doing a little research and think its a 100% original Fleet Option. The single headlights were factory http://www.oldgmctrucks.com/page0380.html

Welcome to the Stovebolt. I found my water pump at JC Whitney. I used a Cardone catalog to find the part number.

Welcome to the Stovebolt wave

Have the Flying Dutchman rebuild your existing pump if you can't find a replacement or you want to keep the original casting.

I just had him do two for me and am very happy with his service!

Yes they used the chev dash in those, at least the ones I've seen. And if that is a true factory stock truck, it is best not to do any kind of modifications to it. If that is original paint and no rusty mess, that could in that original condition bring big $. I find it so funny that people that wreck or modify these old trucks think they will then have some personal special thing, not really it seems everyone wants to destroy them, and then after they do they sell them and find another to mess up, only a hand full have a factory stock one that is the rarity. I personalty have never seen one of these trucks restored. Everyone ever advertised as an original restoration always has a non factory modification. And a note: for something you wish to drive the only modification that is acceptable, as long as it is mounted where the original one is and no extra holes or welds or cuts are done is a dual chamber master cylinder.

Kicking self for selling off my Taskforce trucks.
Still looking for an LCF or conventional big bolt in decent shape.

Yes a Fleet Option GMC. Basic everything. No extras. Chevy dash BUT the speedo says GMC at the bottom. Hard to find speedo. Very rare truck now a days. DO NOT change anything. The paint is perfect. Looks original. Matching wheel paint and original hub caps. If I had it, I would consider I hit the mother load. Even Jay Leno has one.
Water pump kits on Ebay $100. Includes everything but the housing.

If I replace parts with OE units does the still keep it "original"? I put on an OE mechanical fuel pump, coil and rebuilt the original carb so it runs. Had a local old timer repair the radiator and just replaced the hoses. I am going to put new tires on it but found a company that sells the original BFG units that it was originally equipped with. Because it has been in the family since day one I plan to leave it stock and let it rock.

People look at the definition of “original “ a couple of different ways. Normal parts that wear out being replaced by NOS parts with the correct stampings and part numbers will keep it original for most concourse shows. There are others that say any replacement parts makes it period correct not “original “.

If the replacement parts meet the original specifications and appearance, I would call it "original equipment", meaning no modifications.

1. Let's see if someone says it must have the original parts that came on the truck, in order to be called OE?

2. The next "degree" of OE would be GM replacement parts?

3. The next "degree" of OE would be non-GM replacement parts that look like the original GM parts?

4. The next "degree" of OE would be replacements that me the original specs but look different?

OK Tim. Good questions, good analysis and good comment.
My take.

1. On our older trucks there are no OE or OEM parts available except NOS and donor/rebuilt.
2. No "genuine" GM replacement parts. See no. 1.
3. The OE's supply is gone and the OEM's are now aftermarket Chinese companies making clones.
4. Not withstanding concourse vehicles/hard core purists, it's a little ridiculous to try and get exact parts that are unseen or unsafe. I.E. sometimes to get a OEM style tire, you sacrifice ride and handling.
5. Many parts supplied when OEM was available were changed in appearance and/or function anyway. Several iterations/revisions were supplied back in the day.
6. The aftermarket has tried to copy things as best cost/qty would allow.
7. If I buy from our vendors and the parts look the same or near, I call my truck original. I like to also get donor parts that are not of a perishable type. I enjoy using original hardware again and refurbishing anything I can. Do we expect to use the old wiring? weatherstrip? tires? rubber fuel lines? brake lines? horse hair? The people who say "it's only original once" are just silly. We all work pretty hard to bring it back to original and don't like that phrase. We restore them to original, but safe and reliable, as possible.
The truth is it's only "new" once.

OE= Original equipment on the vehicle when sold and over the counter parts at dealer.
OEM= Most of the OE parts were made for the auto mfg by subsidiaries and licensed companies (OEM's) Many are out of business or have been sold several times, changed names and changed countries.

We are in agreement, I think, bartamos?

I often say “original style and appearance parts”.

Usually/practically the best parts we could hope for, if we want an original appearance vehicle?

A lot of interesting comments here. I don't disagree with most of them. One person's definition of "original" may vary from the next person's, and it's good to try and define those terms wherever possible.
But these fanatics who say that as soon as you change the oil or replace a tire it's not original any more.....that's just stupid!
