Stock intake, has headers. it is in my dad's '53 chevy truck. What options are there for a carburetor? It has the 1 barrel rochester... well, it's one barrel and it's a rochester( read here if u care to know: http://hardin.home.mindspring.com/1953/numbers.html ) Anyway, what options are there... new carbs, restored carbs... whatever. Just wondering what folks have done before... merely curious, -W | | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 17 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 17 | the headers were a good start!.
you could go to a new intake manifold setup with small 4 barrel (be sure it has a water heated manifold). OR you could go for the cool factor. there is a company called vintage speed that has an adapter (about $90) that will go from your one barrel intake to a dual one barrel intake that looks SOOOOO cool. they also sell the complete setup with carbs, linkage and everything you need to install it (more than $90!). that way you dont have to try to tune dual carbs yourself. the owner is also a great help with setup and problems.
then consider cam, HEI, timing changes, etc ........ you know, all those $$$ things! | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 2,895 Socket Breaker | | Socket Breaker Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 2,895 | I don't think pop is gonna change the intake now that he has the water heated bit on there... I was just curious as to what would 'bolt up. Are there any modernish carbs that could be put on there, bolt on? -W | | | | | Joined: Jul 2002 Posts: 188 Member | | Member Joined: Jul 2002 Posts: 188 | Woog, I like the Carter YF. Its what I have on my 216 and what I'm going to put on the new 235. I've posted the info on the rebuilder I recomend in the past. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | I found a Roch. 1 barrel at a swap meet that had a larger troat. I don,t know what it was off of but it made a 235 run like an 8. Also the 68 up 292,s came with a 1 barrel mono-jet that was larger than the others. It would be agood one for it but you would have to change the throttle linkage. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Major impovement on a 261,way better throttle response, better pull at all speeds and even the gas mileage is better.I believe the 2300 series Holley is a better choice than the Weber Holley butt ugly Pinto carbs. But this ain't exactly on a bolt on. The Holley 1904 one barrel from a 225 slant six Mopar is a great improvement also.A bolt on,but the throttle linkage and choke needs some backyard engineering. Some 50's GMC 270's had a Holley 1904,should work as is on a Chevy | | | | | Joined: Apr 2001 Posts: 162 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2001 Posts: 162 |

It was available for the later 235s and is a great all around carb. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 2,074 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 2,074 | Check out Langdon's Stovebolt for the Holley/Webber two stage two barrel, has adapter to your intake. Not expensive!!!!! | | | | | Joined: Aug 2004 Posts: 1,067 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2004 Posts: 1,067 | About $18 bucks, isn't it?

The cfm might not be as improved as opening up the top of the manifold as Truckedup did, but you still benefit from these other improvements. Wouldn't you?
