Took the truck for a long ride today. Top loader trans with floor shift. Trans shifted fine for the first ten miles. Then it would go into first but grind slightly, but still go into gear. After a 50 miles run and cooling off the trans shifted fine again until I got about 10 miles down the road. It would do this in 1st and reverse gear. I checked the clutch adjustment and it was OK. If I put in the clutch and shifted it to third gear and then into first it would shift with no problem. No problems with 2nd and 3rd gear shifting, up or down. Of note, I did not have this problem when using 85-140w GL4. It is doing it with 90w GL4. Advice appreciated as always.

So after the tranny is warm, it grinds a bit going into first or reverse. Those gears are not synchronized (second and third are) and after the gear oil is heated up by driving, it gets thinner and gears are still spinning as you attempt the shift. I would consider that normal. All my 4 speed trannys do that (none are synchronized in first and reverse).

I cannot explain the difference due to your change in oil. Perhaps it is because it is summer in Michigan now and the oil is thinner?
