1954 stock steering column and steering wheel.

For the life of me, I can’t get the horn button off.

Do I pry out the button and leave the inset around it in or do I pry the insert that button sits and the button and inset comes out

It has to be stupidly easy but perhaps that is my problem

The button goes into the contact assembly as a press fit, most likely it is just rusted. Use some nylon prying tools and work it side-to-side. https://www.flickr.com/photos/advance-design_parts_co/46694747735/in/album-72157631872034068/

I have that Manuel ... missed that page ... geez, I need new glasses

The horn button was installed shortly after prior owner bought it and it was garage kept ... none of that means much as the button is all cruised up and does not move within the housing.

I also am asking as I pried the crap out of it and got no were but chewing up a nice wheel ( a bit to larger diameter for a fat guy!)

So did you get the cap off?

I took some pics on how I remove the horn button cap that does not hurt the steering wheel, but still trying to find those pics.

I punted from frustration and rearranged the garage then started to pull all the burned out bulbs from po conversion to 12 volt ... ops they forgot abt that! I wonder if they all went out at once like a flash bulb or .... never ending list and that is what I wanted when I bought her

For some reason, I cannot view all Craig’s photos on my iPad/Google browser.

However, the two images that I can view are not 1954/55st horn “buttons”. They changed in 1954 - they are round.

I was having problems with my photo's and just deleted the entire post, with the plan to resubmit again.. So, '54 horn buttons are different? If so, my bad. Sorry.

Great pictures. BTW, I pulled out my version of Factory Assembly Manual 1947-54 and I found that diagram with in minutes but I swear it was not in it earlier!!

All my attempts have been from about 2 o'clock threw 6 o'clock to 10 o'clock in removing the wheel. I never worked it from the top or at 12 o'clock position -- I hope and I am expecting the '54 button has that little slot to work from. W/out your pictures, I would have never turned the wheel and tried it from the 12 o'clock position.

Temporary goal is to put a smaller wheel on until I shorten column. My big arse belly has stopped me from finishing the seat upholstery. Since my butt does not have the same padding as my belly, I need some room from the smaller wheel so I can add the upholstery foam (to plywood on top of the original seat frame). My butt needs something more than furniture moving pad and plywood base.

Yuk!! Whoever did that must have used the whole tube.

Next project is a smaller steering wheel much means power steering.

Hmmm, what hides OR does not hide behind the Silicone glued horn button

What certainly not hiding is the nut that holds on the steering wheel!

I guess one instance the rust was beneficial as it looks pretty rusted up
