Last weekend I got the chance to race the old truck at MOKan Speedway just outside of Joplin. And I gotta say it was pretty addictive! Not sure how many passes I made but it was really fun.

This was a private race for another web message board that I'm a member of the HAMB. Most of my races were against a buddy of mine in his 54.

This was my first time racing on a track and my reaction time off the line is terrible.

Very kool. I raced at Mo-Kan last year and it's a great track. I love the family atmosphere and the laid-back attitude that most of the folks there have.

Sounds like you had a great time. I was at the Bonneville Salt Flats for the first part of Speed Week. I took my Ratt Truk and it served very well as my 5-star hotel accommodations. It HAD to, all the hotel rooms in Wendover (nearest town) were sold out. I didn't race it on the salt...but I hope I can do that next month with my 67 Camaro.

KC: Cool pics that what I grew up on drag racing and yes soooo very addictive until I just plain ran out of money.

Old trick sitting on line waiting for tree to go green when last light turns yellow say "and" then just pop the clutch.

Last good drag race I was in was my restored 63 Impala Conv't. 327 against restored 57 BelAir 283 right up "the cut" Wabash. people we're pulling off just to watch us and clapping all the way.

10.32! Thats not bad for the old truck. My friend's turbo eagle talon runs 10.13 in the 1/8th and it beats up on most of the modded up Honda's around. All the import dudes think its fast.lol They think my Syclone (8.04) and Typhoon (8.52) are REALLY fast. They would feel sick if they got beat by your old truck. It looks like you had alot of fun. I may have to get my '63 on the track just to see what it runs.

Mongo,

You should know better than to race a 54. Full pressure 235 and maybe even one of those fancy automatics they just came out with that year.

That sounds like fun.

Tim-

The way my '54 GMC with the Hydramatic shifts through the first 3 gears, every stop sign feels like a drag race. These mules were set up to haul--not in drag racing terms, but as in loads of weight!

You rock Mongo!

Would shutting the cowl vents really improve the aerodynamics at all though? Nice as these stovebolts look, they're about as aerodynamic as a brick [censored]. Great run though!

Hey, 10.32 you would shame the heck out of my 350. If I could do that I would be at the track every weekend.

4.3in84toy.. That's actually a really old post..(08-25-2004), wish the old 53 was in any shape to race right now, it's in about 3 different locations.
The front fenders and hood have got the body work done and are in primer.
Cab has almost all the patch panels in and is about ready for a good deal of body work.
I'm planning on putting together a new bed.
Still searching for better rear fenders.
Then all of the above will get painted.
Hopefully soon i'll finish boxing the frame and then tearing it all apart to take it to the blaster/powdercoater.
The trans shop is going to rebuild another T5 for me in the next couple weeks.
Then it will all go back together, I'm hoping to have it ready to race for the next HAMB Drags (AUGUST 26th 2006).

Good pix man! I wish our local track around here would hold events like that! How would someone go about get'n a track to have a couple of days a season set aside for nostalgia drags? I know already at the track there's a few old school rails(straddle'n the chunk and look'n at the motor)run'n, and some 55's and 57's mixed in with all the production sports cars and muscle cars, but it would be cool to have a day of nothing but old rides out there get'n it!

Tailgate down offsets the cowl vent open.

=8^)

Man, that looks like fun.
Does it get any cooler than that?

Can't wait to get my '51 back on the road,
then maybe I'll try the same thing at Mountain Park Dragway (Clay City, KY).

Cheers,
mark.
