| | | | Joined: Jul 2018 Posts: 80 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2018 Posts: 80 | i'm working on a 1960s sm 420. i have the tranny out and thought i'd take the top off to see if everything looks good. not knowing anything about it or what i'd find didn't matter i was just looking. once the top was off i drained the fluid and removed the PTO that was attached. looking at the top, i noticed that one leg of the shift fork was broken, missing about a 1/2 inch, give or take.
i looked for the broken part and it's not in the case. aside from some small areas where there is a bit of pitting on a gear, the inside looks to be fine. no chips or broken teeth.
since it shifted fine before i took it out, should i be worried about the fork? i'm gonna change the tranny out but, i havent decided on which one yet so the 420 will be going back in for a bit longer.

Its a little tricky but you can drive the shift rail back enough to remove the broken fork.
