I was thinking about hooking up a custom made air intake kinda thing to my 1 barrel carb air cleaner. Basically like a tube behind the grill going to the air cleaner that directly forces air into it. Would this boost any horse power? Or just be a waste of time to make? thanks.

Fresh cooler air will help, but you will have to really drive fast if you want any ram air. Add a turbo grin , that will shove air in it! Joe

cold air intakes are way overrated
but thay can add up to 5-10 hp probably would not help much if you have one b carb
if youre gonna do it make about 6in around
to make any diffrence

If cold air intake isn't that helpful, then why do the people at Banks Engineering take the time to install a huge cold air intake on otherwise stock motorhomes to pump up the power a bit? I would go for it.

I'm gonna be runnin a cold air snorkel system on my 85 Monte Carlo's 406:

But I plan to run this on the salt flats...the eventual goal is 200 mph in a street-legal car.

If you're in an area wher things get pretty hot, ducting air from the outside and eliminating an open element air cleaner can increase horsepower. Will ya notice it with a little one barrel? I doubt it. But if you were ever to go to a 4-barrel carb and headers, you'd probably notice a difference when driving in hot weather.

ok, seein's how yer in canada i'll tell ya a potential problem.

carb icing in hi humidity, cold air.

a couple for the rest of ya, don't pick up the air from below the bumper.

higher is better.

why?

ever feel the asphalt/concrete on a 100 degree day?

12" off the ground ain't much cooler.

will it do any good?
depends on how fast if you are talking about ram air effect.

just the cooler air can let you run a little more timing(not much) before deonation.
a little more fuel(darn little).
THAT'S where the power will be if there's any to be made.

i have a similar setup on my daily driver. it is fuel injected, but a similar concept involved. i drive a 2003 **** lightning, and i put a large conical air filter on it to replace the stock airbox. i flt more top end power, but it was definately sucking in hot air from under the hood. a gereal rule says that for every 10 degrees you can reduce intake temps, a gain of 1% hp is realized. i fabricated a heat sheild out of thick plastic to block the heat, with rubber weatherstripping aroung the top to seal off the top when the hood is closed. i then ran a 4" duct from behind the grille to the bottom of the heat sheild, supplying fresh, cooler air to the intake. i did notice some gain with this setup, and the truck seemed less slughish to take off at lower speeds. i know this is mainly qualitative data, but it definately can't hurt. i can provide pictures if anyone wants to see.
