Hello all,
I've been meaning to join th(is|ese) forums for some time now, and finally did it!
My name's Chris. I (currently) hail from a town out on the Olympic peninsula in Washington state, called Port Orchard.
It was quite rual when I moved out here some years ago (the way I like it). But these times are a changin'. Anyway, as
Stovebolt goes; I've had some 6 60' GM trucks. All chevys but one; Frank(enstein) a 63 3/4 ton GMC. My current drive
Ol'Blue is a 64 C20 (long stepside). She wasn't blue when she was born. But the kids who owned her before me took a
spray bomb to her. frown Anyway, she's not much to look at. But I love her just the same, as all those before her. She even
still has all her wood in the bed; tho not in very good shape. But hey! she's 54 yrs old! smile
She came with a 292 (detroit iron). But my younger brother also has one, a 66 that he bought with a Mr Goodwrench 292
in it he wanted to swap out for a new V8. So I snathced it from him, so I could build up the original, and still keep her as
my daily driver. So she's now running a 70-something (73?) Mexican 292. Some say they're better because they have thicker
walls. But I say; unless yer planning to bore it out to a 309, or something. It's all just dead weight. The reason those walls
are thicker, is because those new blocks aren't "seasoned" like they used to do when I was young. So unless they make
'em thicker. They'll twist out of shape. Back when I was young they would cast all those blocks, and dump 'em out in the
yards in Saginaw, and Detroit, and let 'em season there for years. Before they bored, and decked (machined) them for their
intended destination (rig). So all the stress in the metal casting was gone by the time they milled them up.
Anyway. Now that I've got the original engine out. My plan is to (at least) tear her down, and clean, and inspect. Followed
by a "standard" rebuild. Then bolt on headers (cast preferably) and fab up an intake that'll accommodate (at least) 3
SU/Webber veriable-venturi (side-draft) carbs. I hate that they put those horrible Rottenchesters on these great motors. frown
So it MUST go, and I think this type of setup is the perfect replacement. smile Last (in this phase anyway) I'll replace the points
ignition with an electronic version. More for the additional R's than anything else. smile

Well, I'll stop here fer now. I'd post some pics. But the weather isn't cooperating today. So I'll post back when it stops raining. smile

Thanks for listening!

--Chris

OK here's some of those pictures of Ol'Blue I promised (they're big).
These are all from when I first got her. She changed a little since then.

Chris, welcome to the Stovebolt. I'm sure with your knowledge of the "60's" that you have much to contribute as we go on this journey with you. Hey, there is even a forum for the '60's....how cool is that!

For help, and best results, always post technical questions in the garage forums and let the guru's here help when needed, or if you just need a shoulder to lean on, or complain, we're here for you.

Welcome aboard! I spent most of my years in the Navy at Sub Base Bangor and in the Bremerton ..silverdale area. Fond memories of the beautiful area...after a 75 day patrol at sea on a Trident Submarine during our "off crew" time we would spend alot of time salmon fishing...they run so much bigger there then the freshwater salmon in Lake Huron thumb area. This is a great site not only for questions but if you lacking and searching for parts these people on this site are great help. I myself am a newbe to bringing a stove bolt back from the grave and just painted my frame and put on front suspension on my 51 Chevy 3/4 ton. Now to the rear! Good luck and I definitely remember all the rain! Jeff.

Welcome aboard Chris, I'm a few miles south of you in Gig Harbor.
Last time I was out at Ron's auto wrecking, he had some 292 stuff. Keep that in mind.

First off;
@All. Thank you all for such a warm welcome!

working backward...

@69Cuda (Mike)
Nice to know I've got (stovebolt) company out here! :)

@Justhorsenround (Martin)
You got that right! Rebuilt my dad's 63 chev two tone belair @ age 12, and have been hooked ever since! :)

@sstock (Steve)
That's funny to hear. My wife was born, and raised in Gig harbor! Nice to hear I have some (stovebolt) company
out here! Oh! and thanks for the heads-up!
Maybe you, Mike, and I could hook-up, and head out to the Bummertown raceway one weekend, and pull a couple quarter-milers.
Or just watch others do it. ;)

@Jeff. I salute you!
Thanks for the welcome. Heh, you can say what you want about the salmon out here, and I agree, it's good! But we have *nothing*
on the pike you have out there! I had the good fortune to make it out to McGreggor bay several years ago. The pike was a treat to
catch (easy), and even better eatin` -- don't mind the heavy metal(s). ;) ;)
Question; did you paint your rig before you built (up) the motor? If so IMHO you did it backwards. Nothing like gumming up new paint
puttin' yer new engine in a nicely painted rig. :) But that's just me. Seems alot of people prefer to work that way. I was just never able to
figure it out. :)

Thank you all again!!! I look forward to hearing/talking to you all soon!

Welcome to the 'bolt.

I grew up in Orting. My sister lives out near Port Orchard, but used to live in Gag Harbor.

@Jess.
In My (not so) Humble Opinion -- Good choice!
I'm still on the fence on mine. I'd definitely leave it as-is. But the kids that owned it before me
hosed it with a spray bomb. So now it's (mostly) covered in the wrong color, and the wrong
(type of) paint.
In the end. I think I'll probably get the color code from the VIN using my VIN-DECODER-RING,
and get the oil based enamel paint. Then paint it myself. But until I'm done with the complete
reno on my house. I'll have to use her for actual work. So it'll be awhile.

@Rusty Rod
Thanks!
Love Orting! Tell your sister I said hi! smile

Spray bombs are not so bad. they can make the vehicle "one color", and it usually gets sanded off anyway. Except for my ex- Ox, it went to Germany with a spray bomb paint job!

Welcome to the Stovebolt nut house. I also live in Port Orchard. I just picked up a clean 3/4 ton frame for my 1954 3600 pickup for $200. It is painted black and the suspension is all good and tight.
