After getting my all original 58 Viking 60 , 283, running and braking , I got all lights and wipers working. After sitting for the hot Texas summer, I installed the Omaha standard grain bet to truck last week. The Omaha standard one ram hoist is working great. Fun just to lift and drop the bed. Next I want to cut down the 4 ft metal box sides to 18 inchs or so. Always a challenging project but so fun and cool to have something different from the crowd. Lovin big bolts.
Hey I put a grain bed with hoist on my '56, just trying to get it all wrapped up. Want to cut the sides down also, more useful for hauling firewood. Post some pics! What are your ideas for making to tops of the bed sides look finished (and no sharp edges)? I haven't put much thought into mine yet.
Rather than wreck good grain sides, wouldn't it be just about as easy to build new shorter ones? Especially with the metal ones. I would just set them aside and build wood ones to the height you want. That way you could always put it back to the original configuration if you chose to.
On my '63 GMC 4000, I pulled the sides and end gate to my grain bed and left the front panel on the truck to protect the back of the cab. Trimmed 2x4's down to fit the stake pockets and bolted 2x12's 16ft long to the 2x4's. I then bolted 2x2 angle iron to the tops of the 2x12's to protect the top of the sideboards. I don't plan on using the grain bed, just decided to save them in case I sell the truck. JP
I'm doing a full restore (required work) on my 6400. Not in love with the Anthony grain bed with single hyd hoist. Darn thing is 13' long and 95" wide with a full steel diamond plate top and weighs ... a bunch. Was thinking of modifying the upper scissor deck and just welding/bolting it onto the frame without the hyd and lower rails portion. No sides on it. I think Id rather have a gin pole and rolling tailboard setup with the PTO powering the winch. Open to ideas. Chassis work and brakes are finished, brake and vacuum lines are replaced, tires and wheels rebuilt, new king pins, rebuilt front springs, wheel bearings. Body work and paint is next. 261 is bored 0.080" over, crank mains and rods are 0.040" under, new cam, pistons, lifters, oil pump etc. Engine should goe back together this week but now I've found a cracked intake manifold flange and bored out off-center holes in the exh manifold so now I'm searching for those replacements. Whoop. I'm not an Aggie. But sent two daughters there , guess it just rubs off on me lol. We live in Mid East Texas We need to get all the Texas stove bolters to have an event to meet up at. We went to Lonestar roundup in 2017 with one of our apaches. Ton of fun. Pete
