I looked in the master parts book on line but did not see what I need....
I have a front, straight axle, I believe to be a 1959 but not sure. Can someone throw me a hint....
The number as best I can tell is 36568...then a embossed figure looking like a triangle and GM278 following that.

.....I want to ID it for sure as I am going to offer it up to some bolters. I want go into details here as this is not the swap meet but if I can identify it I can make a good deal on it to someone for the way its equipped.

Look a little harder at the forged number...I think your missing 72 at the end. The only number in my parts books that start with "36568" end with 72 (3656872 = 41-55.1 1/2 ton).

The 55-59 1/2 ton would be marked 3737562.

Mike, thank you for your response. I had cleaned it with brake cleaner, steel brush and lightly sanded it but I will check it again in better light. Kind of dust dark when I checked it last evening.

I won't get back to the shop till tomorrow but I will do it. Yes, it helps.

The numbers you cite are casting numbers, not part numbers. Chev and GMC 41 through 55 first series used a 365872 beam. A later steering knuckle will work by leaving out some king pin shims.
