I have seen folks ask this but not sure I ever remember hearing my solution for it...

I found that a strait razor, like what you would use to clean paint off of glass will cut old undercoating right off of the under side of body parts. Just lay it down just like you would if you were attempting to scrap the paint off. I was somehow able to get between the paint and the undercoating and pretty much cleaned it right off. I tried to use my wire wheel and that took too long the razor blade did just fine for me. In my case, I mounted it in a holder and went to chipping it away. Be careful not to cut yourself for sure.

I just went through this this past weekend. I'm trying to get the old undercoating off my fenders so I can paint them. Starting with a wire brush and a gasket scraper, I thought I was in for a very long process. Then I switched to a wide (1"?) wood chisel and like you said, it came off with no problems at all.

I am using a heat gun to warm up the tar undercoating than scaping with a putty knife and it seems to work faily quick.

I used the wood chisel trick too. I will try the razor trick next time

Be very careful of your hands when scraping with a straight razor blade, they are brittle and don't like undue force applied to them. I have a scar on my right index finger from the back of a broken razor blade.

I would use an old wood chisel sharpened to razor sharp.

There's no easy way to do this. I borrowed a pneumatic undercoat removal tool from a friend (it's a circular wire brush) and it took the stuff off instantly (where the tool would fit). The rest of the stuff came off with eastwood undergone, a paint scraper and a lot of patience. I got half the cab done this weekend, will finish the rest next weekend. BTW - it's totally worth it.

If you don't care about the paint and can get a partner you can use a propane tourch on the opposite side of the undercoating. I did the entire floor of my '50 AD this spring in about 45 minutes. Old stuff rolls right off. Just heat it until it gets soft, no need to burn it. Keep moving the torch and scraping. I recommend doing this outside or with the overhead garage door open. Works great.
