I have a 1958 Apache 3100 currently undergoing a period correct frame-off restoration. I would like to know if the 'behind the seat' gas tank came painted from the factory and if so what color. The one removed from my truck was unpainted,

To the best of my knowledge all of the behind the seat gas tanks were unpainted.

My 56 3100 truck is mostly stock from my understanding and my gas tank is a light grey color.

Mine was kind of weird and I have never determined if it was 'factory painted' or not, but in case it matters: It had a grey color painted on it that perfectly matched the interior original paint (that was protected from later changes by being mostly inaccessible). It was hand-painted, and was applied on even the fuel line part that was accessible in the cab without the seat in place. The backside of the tank was bare steel.

It looked like the factory (or someone shortly thereafter) installed the tank, then hand-painted it to match the interior color.

The tanks are tin/galvanized coated metal, they were not painted.

On Advance Design (and New Design) trucks:
I have seen them unpainted.
And, I have seen them painted in-place, with no paint on the inside cab behind them.
