I picked up this Dayton-Teel centrifugal pump for next to nothing at a garage sale. Talked to one of our Stovebolt buddies, "Welder Dave", who worked at a Grainger outlet back in the day and he said they sold a ton of these little units. This one looked like it had never been used. I suspect that the owner bought it as a backup in case his basement flooded. I flushed the fuel tank, checked the oil (clean like new) and put some fresh petrol in and it fired right up on the first pull. It ran fine for about 1 minute then just stopped dead and won't turn over. So I figured the pump froze up on me but......now that the pump is off I find it's the engine that's locked up. Next step is to pull the side cover and see why the crank/rod or piston locked up on me. However....I can't get the side cover off till I get the impeller off the output shaft. And it won't budge and there are no outward signs of a bolt or key of any sort. I don't want to force anything because there are no longer any parts for this. Besides....a $10 garage sale 2hp B&S Teel pump isn't worth putting a lot of money into replacing a hard to find if not impossible probably expensive part. So I'm throwing this out in the hopes that there may be one of you farmers/contractor/small engine repair guy or just a back yard mechanics who may have a clue as to how these come apart. HELP a'fore I ruin a nice little pump and motor. Denny Graham Sandwich, IL

Denny Graham Sandwich, IL I studied every word of your post, and discovered that you have answered your own question, so I eliminated the extraneous verbiage, distilling it down to your answer. Thanks, but, no thanks, Carl
I always had time to study Denny's verbiage before I retired, because I always learned something. Now that I am retired, I'll read Denny's verbiage because I have the time.
I like Denny's verbiage as much as I like your joking/stabbing and incisiveness.

It might help us help you on the diagnosis ?

Chances are the pump just slides over the engine shaft and it's stuck/rusted in place. Try driving a couple of thin chisels or cheap flat tip screwdrivers between the crankcase cover and the pump housing after applying a little persuasion with a Victor Hot Wrench to the center of the impeller. Is there a pipe plug or other opening that might give you access to the coupling? Maybe there's a set screw that bears down on the drive key. Jerry

The other option that I thought might be that the shaft was threaded with a right hand thread and the impeller was threaded onto that. And.....that's exactly what it was. I used a strap wrench on the impeller and blocked up the flywheel and it spun right off. The engine turns over but is very stiff, think it might be the rod. I'm draining it while I take a break to mow the lawn, you know how much lawn I've got to mow right? Dang stuff is growin' so fast even cutting it every 4 days I've got enough to rake and bale each time. Movin' on to the next challenge. tks DG

Got the whole gang on Sweetie Face's side, all ten of them, comin' up from NC for the holiday, Which means I'm not gonna get anything done round here till they all head for the hills next Sunday. Besides.....temps are lookin' like they're gonna be close to triple digits, for a while and the T/H heat index is gonna be in the teens so.......taint gonna be much gettin' done in the barn for a while. Don't know how ya'll down there in the tropics can stand this sort of heat most of the year. At least up here we get a break by the end of August. Well, the pots a boilin' so I'm pourin' a cup and heading out to the sweat box before the sun comes up. If that little B&S got drained over night maybe I can get the side cover off and find out what the problem is. Happy 4th. to all.....and don't blow a finger off or shoot a neighbor celebrating tomorrow. Denny G Sandwich, IL

Well...one of me Stovebolt buddies stopped by yesterday afternoon and suggested I pour a shot of Kickapoo Joy Juice down the cylinder before I tore it apart and see if that loosened things up. That I did, a little Marvel Mystery Oil and pulled it thru a few times and she loosened up right away. Fired it up and ran it for about 15 minuets. Glad I tried that, seems to run just fine now. Normally having an engine seize up like that that would bother me but again, this was only a $10 special. I suppose if I pulled the piston I'd find some nice score marks on the skirt. But this little old B&S will probably still be running long after I'm gone. So.....end of story, thanks Bruce, took your advice and it paid off this time and I've now got another tool to find a spot for in this over crowded shop of mine. Denny Graham Sandwich, IL

Oh...and one last entry about that "antique" B&S L-head engine. Although the engine looked, and even runs like new, the kidney shaped foam air filter had turned to a sticky mass of yellow/black jelly. A couple hours of driving around to a dozen HDW stores and small engine shops and I finally gave up and began scouring the internet. Same conclusion, no replacement parts found for vintage B&S engines. Lots of foam filters for the new ones from eight to twelve bucks which I though about buying big and cutting down. Then...I recalled the last time I scrubbed down the tars on Old Blue, I went searching for that big open cell foam sponge and....of course, it too, like so many things around Shangri la, was in hiding somewhere. Back to Walmart's auto section and I grabbed a couple $1.69 3" thick sponges in green and orange. Traced out the pattern, sliced them up on the band saw and cut the intake hole with a hole saw in the Delta Drill Press and voila....a perfect replacement air filter for under two bucks. DG
