Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Dec 2015 Posts: 47 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Dec 2015 Posts: 47 |  Just thought about this, in the midst of the excitement to remove the clutch from the truck, I pulled the clutch and flywheel without noting the orientation of the flywheel on the engine/crank. I realized that as I saw the drilled balancing holes on the flywheel, when it was on the floor. I assume this can go back on multiple ways and therefore need to get to TDC before installing or has anyone had any experience otherwise? The truck is a '52 Chevy 3100 with a 235 CI engine.

In my limited experience with Chevy engines from 1937-1958 the flywheel can only go on one way as the orientation dowels are off set, not symmetrical. Some one with more knowledge than I will chime in soon, but I think you will be all right.

'54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed. '55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.

However, the dowels are offset in such a way that there's only one position the flywheel can fit the crankshaft. If the dowels have been removed from the crankshaft flange, get the #1 and #6 pistons exactly on top of the stroke and align the TDC mark on the flywheel with the pointer in the bellhousing window. The balance drilling is done when the flywheel is manufactured, so the holes aren't crankshaft-specific. Jerry
