How many quart of oil does it take to fill a 235? I did my first oil change and I put 5 quarts in it but its still way to low, its barley on the end of the dip stick.
I haven't warmed up the motor yet, could this be why?
I looked thought the Shop Manual but I couldn’t find anything about how much oil to use. I did fill up the ail filter canister.

I fill like an idiot for having to ask this eek

I put 5 quarts in the oil pan and 1 more in the filter canister if you have one. It doesnt read exactly right on my dipstick, but I know where full is by the specs.

6 quarts sounds good. Do you have to warm up the engine before it reads correctly

Are you sure its a 235? Some GMC motors take eight quarts.

It seems that definitely more than 5 quarts came out.
It looks like a 235 has the 4 bolts on the valve cover. Single carter carb. Six cylinder.

I have an old 235 ('48) splash oiler in my '51 and it takes 8 quarts. First time I changed the oil and put in 5 quarts, it baffled me as well. If it's got the original dipstick, keep utting oil in until it reads full on the dipstick.

just curious PAfarmer, does your splash oiler 235 also have the four bolts on the valvecover like the later full oil 235s?

The head #s are 8385913. block is a 3764476...235

I added 6 and now it right in the middle so Im happy now. That last quart went a long way.

So does this mean its not a "splash oil"?

The number of quarts always puzzled me. But as I wrote, my book says five (not counting a filter) and it shows full on my dipstick. I have a second 235 and it takes five and both dipsticks show full. What adds to my confusion is that the book says U.S. quarts but being up north we don't get quarts only litres. If I recall 5 quarts equates to 4.78 litres. On another note, if you buy a gallon of paint, you don't get a gallon. You get 3.78 litres. Paint cans are made in the USA to gallon sizes. Metric Madness!!!

I feel ya on the conversion madness we use lots of measurement units at work. I work for a company that was owned by Sweeds and they went by Mils. Germans bought us and they go my Microns. The machine shop I have stuff built at goes by millimeters, inches and thousandths.

Glad to see im not the only one with oil capacity confusion.
My main reason I questioned the capacity is my dip stick looks like (well it has) been welded by an armature welder at the top portion where the blade connects to the handle. I was thinking maybe its to short. Maybe it’s a factory weld.

Articat53gmc,
Just getting around to answering the question regarding my 235 splash oiler...
The older 235's like mine have only two bolts right through the top of the valve cover just like the 216's. They also have the large side covers.
My oil pan (big as you'd expect) has trays for each of the dippers to pick up the oil.

My 1960 shop manual says 5 quarts plus 1 more if you have a filter.
