I actually found it helpful to have the doors on so that I could use them to line up the rockers before I welded them in.

Before doing so, mark the hinge locations on the door jamb and the door with a scribe, to ensure proper alignment when re-hanging the doors, if you take them off. I found it a lot easier, however the do not have to be removed.
I do suggest using a spot weld cutter, for drilling the factory spot welds. I have done it several times and this is the best method and results.

It's a little more trouble that way, but much better than finding out later that the rocker needed to be moved a little to get it lined up right with the door. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 2,384 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 2,384 | I usually use zip-in 1/4" head sheetmetal screws to hold the rocker on, mount the door to check for fit. On the burb a coupla weeks ago I had to move one rocker end down about 1/8" or so. Sometimes you can get them to fit better than they did when new, mass production ya know. Then when you pull the screws just weld up the holes. I find an air drill w/a 3/8" or so bit is much faster than a spotweld cutter. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 38 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 38 | Thanks again Guy's for all the info,Well being a true Backyard Machanic and working on My truck in a field..I can't do any welding just yet untill I get my truck ready to drive {Don't want to catch the field afire!}especially since it's Not My field...
Anyway I put My new Patch panels on My front fenders and one Rocker panel..And I used Lord Fusor Bonding agent to secure them in leiu of Welding...Now I know what some of You will say about this method...I'll have them welded after I get it registered and am able to drive it..And Hey if it holds the Space Shuttle together {I figure its space age glue} It will hold My old Chevy together...Anyway I'll let You all know if My fenders or the Rockers fall off. | | |
